    Hello,

Back in 1959, at Riverside Raceway, the biggest names in drag racing were in attendance for an all-out East vs West Meet. All day, the runs were outstanding and the atmosphere was fabulous for a young teenager in the middle of all of these different racers. But, one dragster was different than all of the rest. “One of these guys is doing his own thing…” to paraphrase a famous Sesame Street song… Was it a rare engine? The small fed certainly was a rare sight among the long, sleek, powerful motors of the top fed racers of the time.

Considering that the car in the far lane is a Crosley, that thing is positively tiny! Any guess what engine it was running?

  12. Nice replies there HAMBers.
I assume that the 426 hemi was always due a ban in NASCAR every year.
Much easier to build 440 headed 426 engines in the 70's as loads of parts for them.
Finding 426 wedge blocks is a much harder thing to find!
The engine I have here is a 1969 440 wedge engine.
Sixpack crankshaft with special 440 length, HEMI rods.
Sixpack '4 valve relief' pistons and the 'open-chambered' OVALPORT-Weslake heads.
There is another pair of oddball 'closed-chamber' OVALPORT-Weslake heads at Mother Mopar (somewhere).
Edelbrock STR-14 inake, modified to suit the oval ports with a 1050 Holley dominator on top.
Has got plenty of Dyno-miles on the motor judging by bore wear!

  13. Don't you just love a POLY motor!
My UK friend has done a 402 Poly build under the guidance of Gary Pavlovich.
    A true Poly Genius...

  14. I am no expert on the meter but if memory serves, Simca built an OHV 60" motor on the V-8 60 platform for trucks then it eventually ended up in Argentina. it seems like I read that someplace when I asked the same question last year. LOL :D

A search for EMI-SUL will have you reading about the Brazilian Simca V8 !!

    Thanks

    Dana nailed it! :D .
AFAIK, from everything I've read on the Ford Indy DOHC, the whole mill, incl the heads/ports, et al, was conceived, designed, & built by Ford, not Weslake.

Another neat mill, no pics though, is the air-cooled, hemi-headed(?), v-8 rear-engined Czechoslovakian Tatra. Mmmm.

  18. Hi Hambers.
The 60's was a glorious time for all things V8!
Once the hemi got banned in 1970 the writing was on the wall.
I was just leaving school in 1973 and the glory days were over!
I was working just a three day week as the fuel crisis hit the UK.
Looking back it doesn't seem possible that the V8 guzzlers are still going strong!!!
I have been rounding up broke and busted UK hemi's just for fun.
Most of them only fit for 'display stands', but even as non-runners, they are a sight for sore eyes...

Best wishes John, Kent England, home of Weslake Engineering.

This lightweight opposed-piston diesel boat engine is based on a Weslake diesel aero/industrial design:
With a few tweaks it would fit very nicely in a Morris Minor: perhaps the only really appropriate Minor diesel swap.

  20. Nice engine Ned!

That would look awesome in a sand/dune/baja bug...
I built a 2.0 litre baja back in the 90's and regret selling it now.

Best wishes and happy Christmas from John

    Unbelievably super cool rare stuff.
    Makes my submission seem tame.
    And that's saying something.
But they only built about 400 of these in 1963. Chrysler 300J short ram 413.

I once saw a coupe with one of those intakes. He was running at the vintage drags. He told me the intake was rare because the runners were not bifurcated all the way back to the carb plenum.

I think I'd run a hydraulic cam with that. I'd hate to adjust the valves periodically.
