My friend has had this key since he was a kid. Always a car guy, he found it in a thrift shop as a small kid and had to have it. He's always wondered what it fit. Any help would be appreciated.

    Yup, Ford.

The keys to my '60 Falcon look like that.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that there is an H on the other side of the key where the side pictured says USA. I'm curious if the F O R D on the top has worn away or if it wasn't never there on this key.

Non-licensed aftermarket replacements will NOT say Ford on them. You have to pay to license the name and block lettering.

We have the original set of keys from our 63 1\2 Galaxie and the ignition key is identical to your pic. It has the USA on it as well even though ours was built in Windsor, Ontario. That said, "gimpyshotrods" info makes me think our key may have been replaced at some point! We are the third owners. Regards, Dave

Ford ignition key. There was another one paired with it that had a rounded end for the trunk.

I got the magnifying glass out and there is zero evidence that there were ever FORD letters in this, however I also have a set of keys to a 78 Caprice that have GM entirely worn off, but I know they used to. All of the reproduction keys I've seen are a similar shape, but didn't have the V on them. Did they make some aftermarket keys with the V and the horizontal lines?

I drove a 57 TBird to high school in the late 60's. That is the exact same key. Had a 57 Fairlane at the same time and it also had the same key. It's definately 57 but could be others as well.

Yep, defiantly Ford key. Probably a replacement key, all the originals I remember seeing had FORD lettering on them. They probably had to pay more to use the lettering, so they just licensed the logo [or just copied it] instead.

I have a Standard Ignition key that came with the new ignition lock I put in my Edsel...it looks very similar, aside from not having the USA stamp on it. The V and lines are pretty much the same as yours.

Just a wild stab here. I'll go out on a limb and say Ford T-Bird.

From all the posts above I would say what you have there is the Ford 'master' key. :)

By the way, looks exactly just like the key to my 1980 Ford Cortina.....

  19. This one starts my dads 63 Merc. I've had the same key for a 65 Ford F-350 also.

My 63 Fairlane had keys that looked like that and I am using a 64 Comet ignition switch in my 38 Chevy (don't tell) and it uses the same key also.

WOW, interesting thread. Hmmm, I'll guess they fit a T-Bird. That wasn't too hard.

    These are for a 66 Bronco....weird or what? IMG_1275.JPG

  25. I don't remember about 1954 Fords but 55 and up all use the same key until 67 when the double sided key came out. Same key is used in pickups and big trucks.

They are easy enough to get, even with the Ford lettering.

Thanks for all the replies. My best guess is that this must be a replacement key because I looked the thing over on both sides with a magnifying glass and it doesn't appear to have ever had the letters. I thought it was strange is was so similar otherwise, though. I wonder what the H stamped on the back meant.

  30. No, sorry, I'm just being a wise guy. I've got a lot of those old Ford keys laying around.
