In case anyone in the area is interested, and hasn't seen this thread....

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-iowa-1-000-cars-to-part-in-november.1036656/

There is a junk yard in Burlington Iowa that is getting cleaned out. As of last Saturday, there was at least ten, 58 - 64 Pontiac / Olds rear axels in there. Didn't see any 57's. The rear axels are all still in the cars.

Here is a link to their Facebook page.

They are selling by the pound, and this Sunday is the last day to buy parts. No torches are allowed, but SawzAlls are OK, as are the portable generators to run them. There was still a lot of cool old stuff left in there, as of last weekend, including early Caddy and Olds V8's, and Y block Fords.

You guys must be cooking your turkey because not much smack talk going on here.
My plans for thanksgiving is to pull the engine out of the BelAir to get ready for a fresh bullet and then install the Pontiac rear end.
This should give me a more bullet proof drive train for next season.
I need to install a pass seat and finish up the interior so I can join and run with are local NSS group.
Happy holidays to ever one and have safe travels if you are on the road.

Salty- sounds awesome. What gear ratio are u going with in the Pontiac rear end?

The next thing for the Okie are some headers... the only ones that would fit in my rush to get ready for the Meltdown were a set of old super stock style headers... they were tiny and probably choking her a bit.... I can't wait to see what they look like when the master craftsman is done with them.

4.88 is what I have to work with... should be fun. I see a roll bar in its future.

Pardon my ignorance but is that truck block one with the big cut out near the top of the bores like on some 409's for some reason?

The truck block has the relief on the bottom of the chamber by the exhaust valve.
The truck block is the preferred block for racing by some people because it un shrouds the exhaust valve for better flow.

A few months ago, I posted a picture of my car and Rick was nice enough to point out that I wasn't doing myself any favors with my headers. The project to put the new motor in my car was way behind and we put the motor in the week of 4th of July (or about 11 days before the Meltdown last year). Of course we ran into many different issues and one of them was that my headers would actually touch the fenders due to the adapters I need to run. So, I had an old pair of fenderwell headers that were probably intended for a 265 back in the day. In a rush we got them on and never took the time to try and do anything with the adapters to match the ports. Well, I am finally taking care of that problem now (THANK YOU FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT RICK)....here is an example of how much the adapter was covering up the exhaust ports...

More to come on the new headers and the amazing work done by someone who I think is one of the best, and youngest, craftsman out there...
