Hey guys! Some of you may remember me from my 1948 Ford truck build thread or more recently know me through my girlfriend's 55 Chevy truck build we are doing together. I love old trucks but am getting anxious to build something a little more.... Hotrod. So after a few months of looking and knowing the right people, I found a model T sedan. It's in very rough shape... But it's a start! Being 20 years old I took what I could get in my price range... After driving 3 hours away... almost to Missouri! Got it home and tucked away in the shop while hunting for patch panels and waiting to go get the frame... More to come as progress goes by...
Little known fact all early Ford's were built with the bottom 6 inches already rotted out. At least all the ones I've seen here in New England. That looks like a real good start. Good score! Now get welding
If you're not already proficient in sheet metal work, you will be by the time you get this one built. But it'll make a nice car, don't get discouraged. Go for it!
And I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around a guy born in 1995 building a Traditional Hot Rod. I guess all is not lost after all. Good on ya'!
Haven't done much metal fab, always wanted to give it a shot haha so here my Chance. And haha very few people my age are interested in doing any kind of work let alone build a complete car with their own hands. But I promise I will ask a ton of questions, never built a car from this extend
Get some old or cheap sheet metal, bang and practice till you feel confident.Make paper patterns to guide you.
Yes, that's part of the confusion. But it seems you have the right attitude and enthusiasm to pull it off. And FWIW, I like the "Tyre rake, body rake" version above.
I'm excited to get started I'm going to get a model A frame all set us already, it will need altered but it's a start!
I Have 50 years of Parts laying around the Farm. You need Hydralic brake parts I got them. Axles Give me a Shout 219-819-4604. I will not live long enough to use it all up!! I want to pass the Torch To you!!
Hotroder95 Glad to hear from you today.I have a 31 model A front axle unsplit wish bones backing plates, drums and brakes. To save on weight I could remove mechanical brakes , You want good Juice brakes any way. Or chevy Disc Brakes. I will weigh the Axle and Spring and Wish Bone. Write Back with any Question you have!
For me personally stance is very important to the look of the overall car. I like a car down a bit in the front so your third picture ^ is what I would do. I have built over the years 9 model A's, they are for me Hot Rods. Two weeks ago I bought my first Model T and it also is a two door sedan. Hope to start on it sometime this winter but time will tell. Will follow your build with interest, and good luck!
I got Pictures and weight of Axle , Spring, Wishbone. 100 pounds is About right. You check out the Photos and give me a shout.
Congratulations on your new build! I just picked up a 27 T fordor not long ago. Unfortunately it will be a very slow build. I'll be following yours to keep me motivated. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thank you! Unfortunately mine will also be a slow build, I am helping my girlfriend build a 1955 Chevy truck at the moment as well but when you start your thread I'll be watching!
Well, I wish I had more to update... But the shop has been full with off topic automotive repair... So all my projects are kind of..... But when we found some time my girlfriend got some work done on her truck and I tore the motor down to get it ready to be cleaned up Also I managed to (off topic) take a ride with a few friends this past week after a quick repair on the bike... But while doing all this, I'm working on a deal for a model A frame and a motor for the T.. And huge thanks to the kind gentleman above, I should have a model A axle this week as well!
Good luck on your build. It's awesome to be young and have big dreams. The older I get, the less rust I want to fix, but I've been doing it more than twice as long as you've been alive, so I deserve a break. Its gonna be cool when done. Enjoy the time spent on the build.
Alright, it's been a little bit since I've posted, but it has been crazy busy around the shop. After we got a couple customer cars out, knowing winter was coming I decided to put a ceiling up to help with maintaining a warmer temperature.. And then after that I saved up some money to buy some more parts.. I'm not sure if this model A frame is a good start or what all I need to do to the frame.. but it has the hair pins for front and rear, the model A springs for the rear and has motor and transmission mounts for Ford motor/trans. Then I bought a motor! And some nice pieces! Now just have to get the suspension mocked up.... More pictures to come
I remember when you guys first started out here. Great to see it's all rubbed off on you. This will be a cool build.
Kiwi! It's been a few years now since I first started, I wish I had access to my original account haha but I've learned a lot! Thanks!
Well guys! I'm back again! Life has been very crazy the last few years. Not long after my last post on this thread I decided to take life in a different direction. I was an automotive mechanic, but I found out that the amount of work put in wasn't weighing out in wages. So! I went to school an hour away from my home town to train to become an Aviation Technician. I unfortunately had to sell all my projects off and move away for a period of time. For well over a year I worked full time including over time and went to school full time! I had no time for anything other 4 hours of sleep a night... Finally it all paid off and I got the job of my dreams, moved back to my home town! Bought a house, got married!! Life has been all good for awhile! So, We moved Bad55Chicks 55 over to the new house! Slowly got the new garage organized and tools brought back in. Exciting!! I have not had time to update that trucks build thread but there will be an update coming! So, why am I telling you all this on this particular thread?? I have actually just purchased another 1927 Model T sedan! So here are some pictures to update the thread. I still have a lot of questions and a lot of ambitions. Lets get to the pictures! Here is the first body I went and picked up a couple hours away from my house. The belt line was very rusted out on this one, but it had pretty decent doors with it! Luckily I got into contact with the gentleman who owns Model T Haven and after some talking back and forth I made a trip out his way to take a look around and pick up some parts! This is what I came home with! Unfortunately I didnt take a picture but I also got an extra drives rear panel too! After getting the 2nd body unloaded, I spent some time deciding which parts would go better on which car for the least amount of work. Then I started to unbolt the body! I did not make it far due to the sun going down and my garage being full of cars right now.. The dream job is on hold due to lay offs right now.. But I am back working for another company so I can finish up a couple of customer cars, and hopefully get the shop back in order for hotrods!
Okay guys! Not much of an update picture wise, but after another day off work I decided I would try to figure out how this car came apart.. Boy was that a headache. After a little bit of looking and a little bit of thinking I just went straight to work! It took quite a few hours to get this done.. But the rusted out side of the 2nd body needed to come off so I could get the better side installed. I still have a little bit of work to go before its ready for the other side to be installed, but here is an update on where the body is! I don't have a lot of knowledge on this old of car so I am kind of just learning as I go.. I am mainly worried about getting the body to be in good shape before I go to much further with the build. But I am still trying to plan ahead. And right now I am in a dilemma of trying to decide if I want to try and tackle a flathead engine and go more old school hotrod which is what I would love to do, or if it would just be better to try and go more modern drivetrain? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Just wanted to update you guys! I have been working a lot of overtime at my job and finishing up side work around the house to save money up for this build, and to make room in the garage for the body to be moved in! While working on all that I have also had my eye out for an 8BA flathead to try and rebuild, and some model T headlights. So far no luck on either but I am going to keep trying!
