For all the "Sherlock Holmes" types out there.... There are 16" or 17" wires on the car, a valid Calif. License plate on the front (DMV records anyone?) looking into the gas station there appears to be a late model white car parked next to the gas pumps, the Obsolete Ford sign lists parts up to 1954
So its quite possible that it was more than just a prototype - possibly Ford did a short run of say 20 to 30 bodies and then used those for dealer promotions or possibly some real time feed-back from the general public? Neither one of the pictures from the Ford garage post appears to be the same paint scheme as the cap above, and the car above looks like its an original color and original paint.

The bars on that kid's bike say late 60's or early 70's to me. That body is truly odd, no body line visible on the tops of the quarters, slanted windshield, curved door tops, no sunvisor, odd drip rails, ect.

That's what stood out to me, ape hanger handlebars and banana seat.

So is this car a custom or resto done in the 50's and we're seeing a 60's-70's shot of an aged car?

  9. you can see a Master Charge banner hanging in the gas station. a google search showed that the words "master charge" was first used in 1969...became Master Card in 1979

  14. Check out Ford Life Books. They were was published many years ago. There were 3 window model "A" coupes built as prototypes in 1930, and 1931. the one in your post appears to be the 1931 model.

  15. I see that several mention prototypes, but it looks to me like a Vicky from the door latches forward and a coupe from the back of the quarter windows from there rearward. If someone had the knowhow, they could start with a slant-window sedan, graft tudor doors, then find coupe quarters. Any takers? ;)

I saw in person the 31 3 window at the 1974 MAFCA national meet at the Queen Mary on the main display floor . It was described a as a prototype with no mention of it being not authentic. It had been found on the street in San Francisco. Good enough for me.

It looks to me like, they mated a slant windshield cowl and doors from a fordor to a coupe. Also, if you look at that picture, the body line (or the bead) seems to disappear at the rear quarter panel.

I believe this is what you're alluding to, and no that pic isn't doctored up...

Yes, that's what it sold for. Had a multi-carb KB V-12 for power. Stunning, not real as in no history from the 30s, designed by the late Dave Holls.

But back to that 3W Model A, I have to believe it was the San Francisco car spoken of that was seen in CA in the 70s. Looks right to me.

No, not a slant cowl, it has straight posts. The body bead is there on the quarters but is hidden by the mystery top being mounted with the bottom edge sheetmetal hanging down a bit over the body stamping. It was for sure a sport coupe. The bulky mounting for the soft top is stall all intact inside the body.
