nice Nomad! sure wish I still had mine.

  3. All right, here's mine that I started building in the mid 60s and finished in 1968. Had a 327 with an Edelbrock manifold, a big Holley(don't remember the volumn), a four speed and 5.13 rear gear that I ran on the street. About half the time I ran slicks on the street. The interior was black naugahyde with button tuck. went with stock but new suspension and no front bumper. It was a quick car and my wife hated to drive it. It scared the shit out of her. Out of all the cars I have had in my life, it is one of two that I wish I still had. I remember in particular one Friday night I was going to go out to a local hot spot to do a little racing, I had the headers open (Hookers) and the slicks on and was headed out. As I pulled onto the highway I looked up in the rearview mirror and there was a Highway cop with his red lights on. I pulled over and he got out of his car and came up to mine and luckily it was a buddy of mine. He told me to go back home, that he was going to the same place that I was. So I went home and he went out and arrested several kids for drag racing. Those were the days.
    Later,
    Dick

The '60's was a big decade. Here in Illinois it started with a pretty well level car. Then around '62 cars went nose high, we had preload the rear end for traction. Then in the late '60's cars went ass end high. It allowed low h.p. cars to spin their tires. Mag wheels were the rich boys toys. Steelies were most common with thin white walls and baby moons. There were a few sets of full moons around. Chrome reverse were affordable.

I notice the headlight hoodies .... would never see that on the west coast in the 60's unless it was a custom.

This is a perfect example IMHO, because it is a survivor from the era. Ive seen this Nomad in person and love it.

This one has been sitting in a barn (really) for over 43 years. Hopefully will be at the Meltdown Drags sometime soon.

I actually agree with you, that's why I used the word "inspired".
My first car was a 61 Impala before the 57, but my "world view"as to the Chevys that I've been attracted to (owned) since then is the 64-67 era.
    I have a 67 Nova that I've owned since 1982 and a 66 Suburban that was bought in 1990.

  26. 57chevy.jpg My 57...1969 or so... stock 220 HP 283, muncie 4 speed, Hurst linkage, 68 corvette wheels bias plys, 68 chevelle black interior...and a 69 [I think} chrysler am/fm radio that fit the dash perfectly.
    In 71-72 I built a knarly 11-one 327 motor with headers, 310 degree crane cam and a 3 barrel....ran like stink!

The car you're starting with looks like the one I started w/52 years ago ! KOOL ! Milwaukee Wi. 1964 my first car 57 210 2 door, I bought a junkyard 348 w/ tri-carbs cheap, $175. w/ a 3 speed tranny, this was a popular swap, as the 348 was dirt cheap, bolts right in, was 3 in my neighborhood, the look most of the tri-5 cars I remember went for the gasser style, remove front bumper, raise front up w/ twist in spacers, dual glass packs w/ downturns only, alot of us bought recap street slicks, steel wheels back painted black, baby moons, chrome reverse or cragers on front, most had primer spots from rust repair, tach on dash, 3 gage panel under dash, Hurst floor shifter, AND radio add-on reverb. Whole deal $400/500. ! This car is a cherished memory for me and will purchase something similar in near future, pretty sure it will cost me a little more $$$ than 52 years ago , $$$ has changed some and will be my last old ride I believe. I tried to paint you a picture of tri-5's from Wi., Alot of what I listed applied to all for 50's cars mid 60's and Milwaukee being an industrial town, guys graduated high school, got a good paying factory job and bought a new muscle car, huge # of them on street, street racing, cruising was huge, A GREAT TIME for a car guy
