DDDenny, to each his own. Although it's not my cup of tea either, the more I looked at it the more I thought cartoonish mussel machine's full size, Kool. Maybe something jumping off the pages of "Hotrod Toons" or "Drag Toons".

Denny not a comment but I don't understand, what do you mean "thanks NHRA" and what was at Doubletree. Also I'm not a fan of chopped top fat Willy's, but some are pretty decent, my old one as a S/G car owned by Tom Goldman, he didn't chop it but fixed the previous chop. I sold it as a unchopped streetrod.

You guys are right, to each their own, like many people, I guess I view certain cars like the Willys as "pedestal" cars and view these kind of mods as a bit blasphemous.
I know they are just old cars to some people, maybe I should have kept my opinion to myself.
My comment was due to the changes NHRA made to the overall event, both at Famoso and the DT. Many people were affected by these changes at a much higher level than myself.
The Friday night party at the DT has always been a major part of the CHRR so when we got there the place looked like a ghost town and it was quite dissappointing.
My comment about NHRA had no direct connection to the Willys.

Well here goes: we attended CHRR 2015 for the first time and had a absolute blast no matter where you went. Cars cackleing in the pits everywhere ya didn't know who would be next, or where. Friday night at the Double Tree maybe six cars in their parking lot Cackleing, Walk Austons Fuelcoup Digger, wow I'll never forget it! Thanx, Rick McDonald! Saturday nights Cackle on the strip, push trucks pushed the diggers on the return road in front of the bleachers where they fired up and circled around the tree, Got identified by the anounser and proceeded to the top end to park still running. This went on until the whole strip was filled with cars the entire length! Awsome! Fast forward to this year. Diggers were pushed from the stageing lanes past the tree being anounced and identified never being fired up, all the way down the strip not ever on the return road near the fans. They must have turned them around some where down there because they were now lit and they parked them on the strip at the big end only 40 of them. We were siting at maybe sixty foot mark and could barely see anything. Disappointment. There was also to be a circle of fire but we opted to head to of host Hotel the Double Tree to see the cackleing there. You Guessed it , there was none. I heard that ring of fire was Ok but they didn't turn off the lights on the strip like they did way back when. To sum it up, were glad we went in 2015. Maybe that's what the previous poster meant when he said Thanks NHRA ( ya couldn't leave well enough alone)

Unfortunately there are a lot of changes going on and they are not for the better.

The most probable reason they do not push start down the return road next to the fence and fans is that a few years back one of the rails burped on start up and sent shrapnel into the crowd. It almost took one fellas eye out. I believe there was a clip of it on You tube. Likely a liability issue at the DT cackle fest as well?

    Mallicoat Bros Willys

Identical twins Jerry and Gary Mallicoat became the scourge of the gasser ranks when they unveiled their twin turbocharged B/Gas Willys at the 1965 Winternationals.

The brothers had previously won the 1964 Winternationals B/Gas trophy with a more conventional 6-71 blower but quickly made the change when they realised the horsepower available from the new setup. This method of induction was virtually unheard of at the time, but that didn't stop the boys from shutting down all the biggest names. The fans must have been at a loss to see the blue Willys, with no scoop poking through the hood, run away from the Stone, Woods and Cook Swindler B for a convincing win in the final.

    Hello,
The SWC photo looks like it could have been at the same meet in 1964 at Lions. The event was an All Gassers Meet with the top West Coast gassers in attendance. Atts Ono made his red 40 Willys debut there and asked me to come back to Lions to document his car and the action. There were some outstanding race cars and races on that day.

    Thanks,

    Hello,
This post would not be complete without the total film that I took in 1964 of Atts Ono's red 40 Willys at this All Gassers Meet. It was an outstanding car and build. A lot of custom machining and parts were built on this immaculate car. He was a true craftsman.
An aside: We played on a basketball team together and he was the point guard. I was the center/forward. Boy, could he handle the ball and shoot the lights out...(definitely division 1 material)...But his love was hot rods and racing...
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

By the way, does anyone have a copy of the Popular Hot Rodding magazine that had Atts Ono's car on the cover? upload_2016-12-17_9-16-6.png PLEASE PM ME ASAP.

That is very cool that you have actual film of these cars. And that not every car on the strip is pulling giant wheelies. Back then a wheelie was rare and only the real deal cars could do one not like now with glue on the track and sticky tires.

    Hey LB,
As much as I would like to take credit for that wheelie photo, that time period was after my time at the drags. You were the actual person that posted the wheelie photo and the SWC photo in a previous post 5335. I only post photos and movies that I have taken during my time at the So Cal dragstrips. But, I am still searching for anyone that may have photos of our 40 Willys during 1960 at Lions. With or without the 671 in B/Gas or C/Gas.
    Thanks,
    Jnaki
Here is the last photo that popped up: upload_2016-12-18_8-39-38.png It was in the background of a photo that showed a guy selling cheater slicks in 1960 at Lions. photo/story credit...Greg Sharp.

First ever attempt at road rash protection? LOL :p

  27. Could have been a '40 body (even though it sports a 41 nose.) The '40 bodies had rear fenders with multiple small holes for a factory rubber deflector, in the same spot...might be covering and using those holes...???

Here is another similar one. I agree with G-Willys, probably trying to avoid rock chips on the rear fenders
