Here' a bump for you. I stopped in Gary at 2:00 am almost out of gas in a 32 pickup and that I couldn't get back on the road soon enough.....It's a rough, rough area.
On a trip to Chicago for work I jumped off the freeway and straight into the armpit of Lake Michigan aka Gary... Scary place
Remember that scene from National Lampoon's Vacation movie where they end up in a St. Louis ghetto? It's a lot worse than that....
I lived in Gary until 12 and we moved to California. Several years ago I was back in the general area visiting family and told my uncle that once lived with us that I would like to visit the old house and see the neighborhood. Sort of show my family around. My uncle looked at me very seriously and said "no you don't ". And, that it wasn't safe any more. I Google my old address and there was the house, all boarded up and the neighborhood looking like it had been used for a nuclear weapons test range. I chose the pleasant memories over the new reality. Incredible site to see, scary and sad.
p.m. me an address. I work about a mile from Gary. No promises, but I'll be able to let you know more info about the area.
a nice car in gary? possible. it could be in the hillbilly section called black oak or maybe in the miller section by the lake. i don't think there are any garages left in the hood.
I work in Gary, send me the address. I'll do a quick drive by. I'm friends with some of the local Gary hot rodders
