So I got some time in the garage today. I started off by making a template of the area. 20161017_165401.jpg I sat and stared at in on the car thinking about how to do this... I realized right away that I'm not gonna be able to make it in one piece (not having an English wheel, shrinker stretcher, or plenishing hammer). So I decided to make it in 3 pieces. 2 sides and a middle section.

I didn't want a flat piece back here, I want it curved and flow into the car. So I had to make a couple dyes to match the curves on the car. So I dug thru the scrap pile. These are what I made. The curved one for the inside taillight area, and the other for the rest of the trunk area. 20161017_165412.jpg 20161017_165439.jpg Then I cut the template end off and marked some sheet metal. I measured and allowed myself extra room to curve the metal up towards the body. Cut the metal out and started banging sheet metal. I didn't get to finish shaping it, but it's starting to take shape. 20161017_190129.jpg Still tons of hammering, shaping and grinding to do. But now you can see the look I'm going for.

  7. Yeah, in total awe of your ability to form panels without all the equipment that make it easy. Thanks again for posting.

Looks great! I can relate to the lack of awesome tools. Still working on the awesome skills that you've displayed.

Thank you. I'm liking it too. It's proving to be worth all the work. This is what I had visioned when I was making the taillights, how I made the bottom of them end. Looked goofy for awhile, now it's starting to look like it's supposed to. Can't wait to see how it fits the bumper once everything is fully shaped.

great thread ! thanks for sharing! i love your car, and i love your pics! anyway, i feel a bit frustrated because the title say "watch me section my DeSoto", and i see a great looking sectioned DeSoto, but 23 pages and not much pictures of the sectioning itself :( this is prolly the most difficult modification of the big book, you did it like a boss, and i can't see that metal porn ;)

Thank you. But you see a half sectioned Desoto. I've only sectioned the rear so far. I'm working my way towards the front. The rest are photos of modifications along the way. Maybe skip reading all the comments, and go straight for the photos :)

Today I got the sheet metal trimmed and fully shaped. 20161028_160632.jpg Tacked into place 20161028_181632.jpg I put the bumper back on to check fitment before I went any further. 20161028_181720.jpg 20161028_181903.jpg I'm pretty happy with the fit. So I went ahead and took the jacks off to see what it looks like on the ground. 20161028_182217.jpg My son took this picture of me looking at it, I think it shows how small the car actually is now. 20161028_182544.jpg I hope everyone enjoys the progress. Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Man that's really slick looking, you were right to follow your gut on how it should look.

When it's done you'll be able to get out of the car simply by standing up and walking over the door lol

Looking great, are you keeping track of how many feet of weld will be in this project? Bob

Glad to see you're at it still. Always nice to see what drive and want will produce. You don't need a ton of tools. Keep it up!

  26. Hell mate, that panel follows the line of the bumper so good and tight, well done, you had the right idea and now you proved how cool it will be. I'm impressed and thanks again for posting as I am enjoying the ride.

Thank you. I've still got to make a bottom panel, then move onto the sides. I'm not sure I've seen anyone do it like this?
