Managed to grab a few while doing the other threads LOL.

Before he began his long association with Joe Pisano in the Funny Car ranks, Sush Matsubara was well-known for his wheelwork on the Mondello & Matsubara Fiat Fuel Altered with car owner Joe Mondello.

Funny Car legend “Big Jim” Dunn rose to national prominence in the early 1960s with the Dunn-Merritt-Velasco Fiat Topolino. The car originally ran blown on gas but switched to nitro in mid-1963.

    SUSH MATSUBARA

A definite crowd favorite, Sush Matsubara, near lane, completes his burnout. This car would later be painted with the familiar Mondello & Matsubara livery and eventually set the national record with their 427 Chevy wedge-powered Fiat fuel altered at 7.24, 213 mph at the 1969 U.S. Nationals.

So, were they producing a one piece glass T with the wheel wells recessed? Or was this a homebuilt body mod? Like the wedge body?

Pork was out of the picture by the time Charlie built the Altered. I believe it was driven by "Cheater Bob" Parmer.

  18. Yea , thats correct. Pork drove the Filthy Forty. Charlie gave strict instructions that the car never be washed. May not have looked the best, but was a real runner.

Jim Head raced a '55 Chevy in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, on the day he turned 16 on Sept. 5, 1964. He went on to race a C/Altered Bantam roadster and a number of small-block entries through the tail end of the 1970s. One of his earlier entries was a D/A '57 Corvette pictured

The driver of "Dead Expense," a Fiat coupe, watches for the green light on the "Christmas tree" at Grayson County's Elk Creek Drag Strip. Electronic starting and timing systems replaced the flagmen of the early days. (Roanoke Times photograph)
