    I've had this 283 for 27 years. Until today I hadn't checked the numbers. The casting # is 3789935 which according to what I've been able to dig up came in 61 or 62 Corvettes or passenger. The stamping on the pad is F0718D . The D would designate passenger. Do Y'all agree? Bill

    61 to 64 2 bolt 283 is what my stuff says.

  3. My info says, from the casting = late '61-'62 283 / 2 bolt main / pass and vette.
    I do not see a reference to the "D".
    F= Flint.
    07= July
    18= day
    D = ?

    on the back of the block, not too far from the casting number, you should be able to find the casting date. it will be a letter followed by two, three or four numbers. such as G 12 1 which would be read as July 12, 1961.

    The 58 283 that I'm working on right now has the starter holes drilled in it. Trucks used bellhousing mounted starters through 1972. There was quite a variety....
