Projects 1931 Olds 5W Coupe Build

Thanks... You're a lot further along than me. I've had my 29' Chevy roadster almost 9 years and have been slowly gathering parts. Almost ready to build so I need to get my head around this again.

 

The original material used typically was whatever was available, oak, ash, they were not particularly loyal to any one species. The brochures I read always just said "hardwood", I wanted something reasonably affordable which I assumed was their criteria as well! The material I took out of mine was softer although 50 years in a field might do that to ya'.

 

More wood work this weekend.

 

And now if it rains and I had a windshield I could clean it.

Just found this thread. Great job! I'd like to see more on your DIY dimple die, too.

 

Pretty basic really. Just found parts that fit the bill. 2 1/2" diameter bearing race for the bottom with a 1/2" bolt welded to base plate. The back plate from an angle grinder that had the bevel I needed at the right diameter for the top. After that just a couple of washers and spacers.

Thanks for sharing that. I like the dimpled holes and am always interested in how different people make their own tools.

 

So I had this idea that the Caddy taillights would poke out through the rear trunk. Had kind of a quasi-frenched in look. Unfortunately they struck out so far I couldn't open the trunk and so modification time. I had to pull the tail lights back 1 3/4" to clear the trunk.

Well cleaned up the body. Right now it's got a coat of Gibbs on it, I guess we will see about paint later, love that clean bare metal now though.

I have an issue where the only reasonable route to the bottom of the radiator was through the frame. Basically the Axle gets in the way. So I tried to restrain and protect it best I could.





And that took up a weekend!

Didn't follow the instructions very well step 1 was install the fuse box. But then step 2 would be lay on your back for 3 days wiring the dash so I did this instead, hope it doesn't bite me in the ass later.

No pictures today, but after lowering the body down over the chassis I realized 5 clearance issues so far. When you compress all the mechanical and electrical systems into half the available space I guess it's bound to happen. It was a risk I knew would have potential, in the end I think I'll still be a fair bit of trouble ahead.

That's how it was with my 33 Chevy. I busted my butt the last 9 months so I could drive it before the snow would come again. Keep at it, the reward in the end is worth it. By the way that engine fills the compartment nicely!

 

Thanks for the encouragement! Yes the inline definitely takes up the right proportional amount of space the Olds are a little longer than the fords in that regard.

I think I've spent $500 in wire and connections! Picking up new custom battery cable tonight.





Remote trunk battery means another solenoid required to avoid the live 1/0 cable running thru the chassis waiting to start a fire.

Battery secured and looking very non de script after the cover installed in the end.





Spoke with my local starter and alternator shop and they talked me into a Northstar battery, pretty good warranty, said they were as good or better than Odyssey?
