Sad news, he left quite a legacy of work. "Sunday Driver" was in our high school library, I must have read it 50 times. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have read his stuff since he started with "Car and Driver" in the 60s.He was an excellent journalist but definitely not an NRA member.
Godspeed Cannonball Brock, The Eliminator will always be appreciated thanks to your tenure as it's steward.
Very sad day. But......I had years of joy reading his wild columns and other articles in Car and Driver. I was very, very blessed to have actually encountered Brock Yates up close and personal in my rather dull life. I was in Detroit in the 1980's working for the Big 3, when Brock came thru in the One Lap of America event. On a friday evening stop in suburban Detroit, we were at the host hotel and did an "afterglow" party in a small conference room at the hotel. Brock was very approachable and just a regular guy as we asked dumb questions and had adult beverages for hours. Still have the hat.....someplace ! The other personal encounter was a the Knoxville Sprint Car Nationals in Aug in late 1970's/early 1980's. He was an on air guy for ESPN (when they still cared about racing). He was doing the infamous live coverage of Doug Wolfgang doing the impossible of advancing from the D main to the C main to the B main to the Feature. He was interviewing Doug as he and his crew were working on the car......and myself and my brothers were standing 6ft. away with the lights and cameras rolling .....priceless. And......lets face it , the Eliminator was the ultimate "traditional " hot rod. Oh......and this was the guy who had a 110 Offy midget engine as the base of a coffee table in his family room !! RIP
Lately I've been rereading his "The Decline and Fall of the American Automobile Industry". Originally published in 1983, sadly much of it still applies today. He was an excellent writer.
RIP Broke I always looked forward to reading your work you will be missed. Prayers to his friends and family
