I have read threw several post on identifying Flatties but can't find the answer to my question. If I missed it I apologize in advance for starting another thread. My question is this.... Can you tell if a 49-53 flathead crank is a ford or the 4" merc if it's not in a motor? Like by Casting marks, measurements, etc thank you for your time

Also, the "clean-out" plugs on a merc crank are about 5/8" where as the Ford crank plugs are 3/8"

Don't be fooled by the size of the clean-out plugs. There are Merc cranks with 3/8 clean-out plugs. Post your question on Fordbarn. There is a wealth of flathead info on that sight.
