    Rootie,
Do you know anything more about the hemi engine? Was it Dodge, Chrysler, DeSoto? What displacement?

The windscreen is interesting. Roll bar - not so much.

Bill Snyder was the Minnesota Dirt Track champion from 1946-48, and was ranked fourth nationally in 1947. Bill went on to set 6 land speed records at Bonneville in various diesel powered cars and trucks. He will be 97 years young in 2016.

Further and probably of more interest to the less than octogenarian readers is that Bill became the Vice President of Marketing for Thermo King Corporation which at that time was owned by Westinghouse. Add-on auto air conditioning was prominent in the 1960's and Thermo King added this consumer product to their truck trailer refrigeration main business.

In an amazing coup, Snyder sold Westinghouse on sponsoring Indy cars, sprinters, and midgets for the likes of Pollard, Kenyon, Bettenhausen and others as well, mainly through his connections with Fred Gerhardt. It wrapped around a new truck trailer unit named the Crown 500. If I remember correctly, heavy advertising spots on the Johnny Carson show tied this altogether with the auto air program.

The Bonneville activity and records started with a 6-71 GMC diesel engined Peterbilt I believe. Then switched into a streamliner powered by the new Crown 500 engine which was an Isuzu which was taking the place of the long utilized Mercedes Benz. The Bonneville activities heavily involved Bob Havemann and some of his students.

Bob was the diesel instructor at the College of the Redwoods at the time, but was in fact, one of the first NASCAR drivers and also a midget owner and driver in Northern California. Later he was employed by Thermo King in the Minnesota factory. Google will provide details in several postings including his obituary.

Is Bill still married to the same girl as in 75-76 at Bonneville? She was "easy on the eyes" ...

I think it was 78 or 79 when Bill was coming up with the Thermo King streamliners and I think she was driving. One time while we're waiting in line to run ( back then there was one course and everyone was in line all day) Bill had one hell of a shouting match with her and "entertained" everyone. Made a boring day a little more exciting.

He did run a hemi back in the 50s, though I'm not sure if it's the same car updated.

Vuky's F.I. Spl. loaded and ready to hit the road. The mud screen tells me it's probably on it's way to Springfield. 9-7-a.JPG

    Rootie,
Packhard was killed in 1960, he had good rides then.
    this is 1955-1957 more likely.

Looks like Joe Granatelli changing the right front tire. Crew chief Vince is probably doing the refueling but is obscured in the photo (although you can see his feet) by the guy holding the hose and the other guy who is ready to close the cap when the hose is pulled back.

It would appear that this the "mystery" car that was entered in the 56 500 for Bill Cheesebourg to drive but was sold before he could qualify. 9-12-b.JPG
