I've always been a sucker for Henry J's. They were made for drag racing.

That's one 'hairy' '56. When I was younger I might have wanted to party with this guy.

Yes it is. Just love the 'independent thinking' of the 60's.

  12. I remember this car very well from the early '60s. It was from Nutley, NJ, which was the next town over from me. At the time, it was owned by a fellow named Novatny. They had a repair shop in Nutley. Wish I knew what it looked like today. Good to hear it is still around.
I have owned a '37 Chevy coupe for the last 36 years that was a gasser in the '60s and '70s. Pretty sure it was a car named "The Invader" out of Wilmington, Delaware, owned by a guy named Buck Hollingsworth that ran out of Imperial Motors. I was never able to get in touch with anyone associated with that car to confirm it. Aside from the fact that my car also came from Wilmington, Del., there are many other similarities. Any help in my search would be greatly appreciated.

I've never seen Gas Rondas' rear five spokes drilled like this before.

  16. As a side note, the engine in Bill's Fiat became one of the engines in the Leffler & Coburn Iron Mistress. The engine in Neil's Bantam was the other. In that case two were not better than one.

  18. I've often wondered if that wasn't a better way than the way we drill them today.

I'm sure the engineer types will call out all kinds of numbers relating to "shear" but the average Joe will just try things until either it works or he runs out of money replacing wheels and slicks. Not saying it wasn't common, I've just never seen it before.
As far as how it's done today; nothing new there other than most probably use a drill press nowadays.
I first drilled a pair of wheels (Ansen Sprints) about 1974 with a hand drill, and because I couldn't afford Halibrands which I wanted badly, I just painted them with Krylon gold spray, it made my Ansens look like the ones on Don Carltons Mopar Missile pro stock Duster.

I was at the Beach one Sunday testing my friends new Willys, and Gas was making a run in that Injected AFX and it broke something in the rear and did she go end over end

It was very lucky to be Sunday and not many people in the stands as it wound in the bottom row of the stands, as Gas came out OK too

  21. It was a tire smoker because, just like Art Chrisman's twin engine Hustler, the rear end layout lifted weight of the front slicks when the torque took arched the frame causing loss of traction. Though the Mistress was a flop, Bill Coburn liked the Messerschmidt body enough to use it as a mold to build the bodies in glass.

There was an article on this deal in Car Craft at the time. Yes, early attempt at a containment blanket. Want to say this was 1966?

Bob no help yet on the 37 Chevy but my friend sent me this (edited version) Novatny was his partner and he just had lunch with him yesterday. They meet once a month in the Lake George area of NY.

    Pat! Here's a picture, present,
and past of our ole Willys, 'Baby Cakes'! A guy in Pa. has it,
still under restoration. The original chassis rusted out,and now
it has a 'Fat-Man setup. Also,he found a '40' steel nose he put
on it. I have wrote him letters, and left phone messages for him
to let me know the progress, and gotten "NO" response for 3
years now, from him (???). I don't know what the problem is?
It's a 'bittersweet' situation, but at least the Willys,is still alive!!!
There ya go Pat, good to hear from ya,and hope all is o.k.
    with you, brother Mike,and family!!!...Pete.

    Hey loudbang
I can't find ANYTHING about this particular photo on the internet, I Googled Syndicate 11 (2) see cowl, nothing comes back but the same photo with no real text about it.
I dont know why I have this fascination with the 671.

It was from the Hot Rod Mag series of articles on drag racing. Came from one photo in a google search I think of Ford drag racing. Sorry but I have deleted the links but sent them to another member maybe he still has them. it's a strange one I got it on like page three of 6 and went back to page number one to start this series. Then when I sent him the links a week or so later I tired and the earlier pages were unavailable.I will check with him.

But The photo had no caption other than they just started in 1966. I think I posted all that was in the story in the history part but you never know. This would be in part 6 of the series it went into 67,68 maybe 69 but those are verbatin here
