This is video I shot at the start line as well. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1015454288572896
First time for me and what an incredible time! Thanks to McTim64 for showing me the ropes out there. Won't be my last time.....
I saw it on the salt in 2003. A lot of folks were somewhat critical of putting a million dollar car on the salt. I spoke with a crew member who filled me in on some of the particulars of the car, including that the car had never been a street car. It was a race car right out of the factory. There is a really cool video about John Fitch driving the car on the salt.
So weird I walked the entire pits several times and didn't see his truck. I must be blind in my old age.
Here's a couple of Bonneville guys yesterday, Jeff Arnett and Ron SanGiovanni. Lot of flathead knowledge standing there on the salt! Update on Ron's car. Now that he has the XF/blown gas rear modified roadster record at 192.944, they switched to a fresh flathead on fuel and Ron's son went 185 yesterday, well over the current record. He will try and back it up today!
Happy to report Ron jr. also was successful, bumping the fuel record, BF RMR, from 158 and change to 178.8 today. The family is on their way back to Connecticut according to the last from Laura. Doesn't get much more better than that, one homebuilt race car that started as a bellytank a neighbor dug up rototilling a garden (it was a potable water tank for a '50s bomb shelter), two flathead engines that performed like champs and a father and son who both got to come home each with a record, one blown gas, one fuel. I kidded Laura about the motto of the Roman Legion which was Veni, Vidi, Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered). Kind of fitting for an Italian family from Wallingford, CT IMHO.
We were there on Saturday and Sunday then 1100 miles back home on Monday. I'm peeling and tired now, but I can't get the images and sounds out of my head. Thanks for the post, Gary
I hope you don't mind a couple more shots? The sun coming up over Salt Lake City kind of got to me in a patriotic kind of way. Gary
Thanks for the photos! The chopped '31 Desoto coupe with the blown F-head inline six belongs to me. I drove it down from Montana. More info at hashtag #31FheadDesoto or #MontanaDodgeBoys The Spartan camper converted to a race trailer belongs to Salt Cat Racing of Columbus, Montana. The yellow model A roadster race car is owned by Garry Odbert of Arroyo Grande, CA and is powered by a blown flathead Cadillac. www.facebook.com/MontanaDodgeBoys
