  14. Nothing broke. Zane was obsessed with lighting his Chevy top fueler to the max. At 900lbs. he set up the engine on a deep front dump in an effort to keep the front wheels on the ground. This little SBC couldn't run the top end numbers with the big Chryslers, but with Zane's lighting reflexes, and the ultra light car, he got to the finish line first many times. His launches were like it was shot out of a cannon. First time I saw this car run at LIONS I could n ot believe what I had just seen!

As noted in the story the car ran an early Ford banjo based rear end with the pinion in line with the axle rather than lower down as is the case with pretty much every other rear (Olds, 8 3/4 Chrysler and 9" Ford) that usually finds its way into a front motor dragster. Hence the big "dump". The fact that the engine is waaay back in the car makes it worse.

Bob Greene, editor of Hot Rod Magazine at the time, presents what I assume is a Best Engineered award to George Hurst while a pre Linda Vaughn Miss Hurst looks on.

A great shot of Don Waite's "A" roadster. I saw this car at the 1999 (50th) Grand National Roadster show and apart from some "patina" it looked just like this. Unfortunately I was not shooting digital images at the time and have yet to scan what I took that weekend.
In the background (behind the El Camino) is what appears to be Bob Panella's Willy's pick up.
Edit: It is Panella's gasser as it is seen unobstructed in the photo of the blue T roadster on the scales.

Same car, different eras. Check the ballast on the front axle in the first shot from Pomona. :)

Thank you for the driver ID. I had forgotten about him.
