Nope. Ramming the Chevy, April '61, Hot Rod Magazine. Title blurb "A new experiment in multiple carburation pays off with increased horsepower over a broad speed range".

    From the Edelbrock website;

    BREAKTHROUGHS
Vic Sr. began dyno tests on the brand new small-block Chevrolet engine in 1955. Several power-producing manifolds were the result, the first being the three-carb intake manifold that was featured on the cover of Hot Rod magazine. The six-carb Ram Log manifold for the street and strip was the next development. Then in 1958, Vic managed an industry first by getting one horsepower-per-cubic-inch from a 283 cid small-block Chevy with the new Cross Ram manifold. This breakthrough led Edelbrock to develop manifolds for Pontiac and Chrysler engines as well.

Well the documentation I have from the period says something else. I will post the article tomorrow. In the meantime, why dont you dig up your ad from 1958, and post that?

I think we are really only arguing/nit picking about a year and a half or so..I say 1958...you point to an article April of 1961. The mag you quote probably tested the manifold in 1960 most likely...I will look in my old mags to see how early they are advertised..I think it is important to get an actual date when they were available to buy...I am sure they made and sold the X1 first...then the X2 and X3...they even made an X4 but have never seen one in person. For what its worth I have had about a dozen or so of these manifolds over the years..about 3 or 4 of each model...wish I still had my X3's...they are VERY hard to find now...

I agree 1000%. I love trying to figure this kind of shit out. FWIW, the photo on the Edelbrock website is the same one as the lead shot in the Hot Rod article. The "one hp per ci" blurb appears to be off, The article pertains to the X-1's development, and the engine in question was a 339" stroker with an RR3 roller that made 364 hp.
I think this is the same kind of deal as the Tom Senter/Ansen Sprint deal. '58 is probably when Edelbrock started development, and it probably came to market mid/late 1960ish. I have my kid today, when she goes for her nap, I will dig out '58-'60 Hot Rods, and try to find the first ad that mentions the X-1, and post it, along with the article. That should get us real close.

Ok, well, heres the article from April '61 Hot Rod. Hopefully this is clear enough to read, its worth the effort.

And heres a couple ads. So far, I have reviewed '58, '59, and a bit of '60, havent found an ad that mentions the X-1 yet. I'm not gonna post every ad I've looked, at, just a couple. This one is October '58. To my way of thinking, this one is pretty clear that the X-1 isnt available yet, as they have a blurb talking about 6x2 logs that haven't hit the market yet, but dont mention the X-1. If they had a "revolutionary new intake" close to production, and are talking about release dates for new logs, it seems logical they would mention it.

...one of the many converted from 6x2....looks nicely done.

  9. I saw this one earlier - the work was done well . . . not sure if it performs better/worse than the 6x2 original, but probably a bit easier to sync the 2 carbs!

  10. That is most likely where they are/were mounting bellcranks and/or other multiple-carb linkage assemblies. Normally there will be a cross-shaft at the back (or someplace), probably linkage to the throttle cable, etc. . . . usually with adjustable rods to actuate each carb.

should be easier to sync than this set up I have, still not replacing the 8x2 with this 2x4 100_4747.JPG

  13. I love both setups! How well does the 8x2 run? It would seem that it would be pretty 'boggy' if you open the throttle plates suddenly? Just curious!

6x2 Scott x ram.jpg In the movie "Bikini Beach" there is a scene at the drag strip where Don Rickles takes Frankie into a room full of race cars to pick out one...There is a car with a 6 2 x ram manifold....first one I ever saw.
Here is an interesting set up...

  15. That is a cool setup - who made those little injectors? I've never seen them before, wonder how well they ran?

I have an x3 on a 1958 392 hemi that was raced here in Louisiana
in a 17 ft. flatbottom class runabout boat. It still has all the marine
gear on it. I am really surprised the plastic covers on the air scoops
have survived all these years in such good condition. I saw it run many
years ago, but do not remember much about it. It is sitting in my shop
about a mile from the home of the original owner. If anyone would care
to see it, there are a few shots of it in my albums.

Today I finally picked up my manifold.

Does anyone know how many X3's were produced for the Hemi's? 20210102_101128.jpeg 20210102_101133.jpeg
