So we've got three Chryslers with overdrives behind stock flatheads - two eights and a six. The one we converted to 12 volt seems to be frying solenoids. Anybody know a solid testing method and are there any 12 volt options for these old ODs??

Squirrel, It's stock '39 Imperial OD. Gotta get under there and scrape some grime and see.

What does "...seems to be frying solenoids" mean? I pushed 12V through a 6V solenoid for 12 years, no problems, I will follow to learn but as yet have no recommendations for you.

If it's a Borg Warner, there are 12v solenoids for later ones, but they also had different design solenoids for different cars...I think the early ones usually had longer pins or something.

Posting a picture of the solenoid you have, would be a good start to finding a solution, since most folks who have messed with BW ods probably have not messed with a 39 imperial.

We've pushed 12 volts through it for 20 years and now the solenoid is fried - as in not working and making a connection when tested. I have deduced that 12 volts is the problem as our 6 volt overdrives had given no problem. However, this may or may not be the case.

It is an Auto-Lite solenoid like the photo represents.

What's your on center bolt spacing and solenoid pin length? I have a few from the Chevy world.

yup, that would be helpful...the picture you linked above (which I already found on my search for more info) doesn't show the important parts.
