Need to dig up some pics. My first car was a 68 Firebird convertible. Drove it home in 1979 for $125. Needed lots of work, but as a 15 year old it's probably the reason I became a professional mechanic.

Here's another one I had in high school. A 1966 Chevy pickup deluxe cab, C-10, 283, 3 speed with overdrive. Sears under dash ice cold air. I still have it too.

The 57 pictured with it was a whole different story.

I had a GTO for one-half my senior year, but with 7 mpg (389, 4-speed and 4.11 gears) I needed better mileage. So bought a '68 Chevelle with a 327 and 4-speed and fixed it up. 1966 Pontiac GTO.jpg 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle 327.jpg

My 52 Ford I drove as a junior and part of my senior year in 1964. Then I bought the 1st of my 57 Chevys and I don't have any pictures of them. The 52 had a Merc flathead but with a fordomatic , it wouldn't fall out of a tree.

Didn't have a cool car in 67 but I did drive a 4dr 56 Ford Customline. Up until then I just rode the 32 window coupe.

In 1961 I had a '48 Chevy four door with rotted out floors and the passenger side of the windshield was missing. The front suspension was so worn out that it would pull wheelies when the clutch was pumped. I left it in the parking lot when I arrived at the Navy recruiters office with the keys in it and never looked back.

My first car was my 56 210 my Dad gave to me when I turned 16. He bought it in 1970 for $25! Grew up going to drive in movies in the back seat with my sister. We put a 283 with an aluminum air cooled PG in it with a 10 bolt out of a chevelle. What a great car to learn how to drive in! Original brakes, strong arm steering and good ol bias ply tires! Ha ha I remember when I put radials on it for the first time! Holy shit it was a Cadillac then!! Had thrush mufflers on it, sounded wicked when I stomped on it and being a PG when you pulled it into low... Ha ha ha. All my friends in school used to tease me about the "big back seat" ah memories

Of course I have to include a long story instead of just saying what it was. In the summer of 1969 I was getting ready to begin my senior year at this POS Catholic high school for boys in Mundelein, IL and my dad decided to buy me a car so I could drive myself and my brother there to save the two bus fares because it was about 15 miles away from where we lived on the north side of Waukegan. He was one of those "my way or the highway" fathers and he wouldn't even let me go with him when he bought it. He had a friend who was a salesman at Reed-Randle Ford so I figured that was where he would go but that was OK because most of my friends drove Fords. As he was leaving I asked him if he could at least make it a 2 door with a stick if possible in the hopes that it would be a Mustang. He came home a couple of hours later in a dark blue '65 Impala 2 door hardtop with a straight 6 and 3 on the tree that he got from Sorensen Chevrolet. I couldn't complain because it beat walking so I put chrome reverse on it and an 8 track player in it. There was a guy in my class who was rich and had a built up '69 Camaro with a lot of engine mods and he said he had a 3 speed floor shifter out of a '57 Chevy that he would sell me and install it too for $25 so I went for it. The only problem was when I shifted into second the (4 speed) knob would hit the dash but I didn't care because at least it looked cool. I had to let my brother drive it in November and December 1969 because my license was suspended for too many tickets including one for trying to evade the police after I ran a red (mostly yellow) light. I did a lot of stupid shit back then but they were still the good old days to me....

The motor blew in my '55 Olds right after graduation. I didn't have time to fix it (again), so I drove a $350 '63 BelAir to college. I drove it 40,000 trouble-free miles in the next four years. It was one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned.

I went back to high school to get my final 3 credits. I was 20 yrs. old, married, and had a son. Worked part-time as an apprentice meatcutter. Drove a red 67 GTO with 3800 miles and a purple metalflake 52 Panhead chopper. I was Big Daddy for awhile, anyway. LOL
