  2. The 31 spline axles were late to the party, appearing in the mid-sixties....

Counted 28 on the axles. The gears got dunked overnight in some dirty gasoline. Measured the OD of axles next to bearings, about 1.375., about 1.2 on the splines.

Measured the axle bearings. The OD is 2.825". Is this considered a "big bearing"?

Is the RW207 the bearing number I can goto my local auto parts store and find them. I have the same rear end in my 1954 Ford. Does anyone have a Timken, National etc, bearing number.
I am chasing a harmonic vibration. Driveshaft balanced, new rear "expensive" U joint. I pulled the center section and all looks good to the point of the axle bearings. I will check the pinion angle again with the 4 link rear end.

The 1949-56 Ford car rear ends are actually a Dana 41. Best bang for the buck these days is the Ford 8.8, look for a Ford Ranger 8.8 1990-92 only 56 1/2" wide and many are lockers and under $200 at most Pick-A-Parts here is where to I.D. them http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Ford-8_8-axle.shtml

Nope, the wagon rearends were a Dana, but not the 49-56 car rearend that we're talking about. Note that the Dana rear has a removable cover on the back, this one does not.

I purchased the RW207 bearings for the rear end described in this thread. It was thicker than the original ones on my shafts. I installed them anyway "my mistake". They fit the shafts and into the housing but the thickness wont allow my retainer plates mount flush. I know the splines are not into the center section deep enough. Is there any input on the correct bearings. My custom has been on stands for weeks and out of commission. :(

  14. The rear end you have is the same as what is under my '55 Ford that my parents bought new.
