Hey all, I've been lurking on here for awhile, but just decided to make a thread for my current build. I just picked up this '31 roadster about a week ago. I am building it into a pre-war/traditional style hot rod. It came with a seized 4 banger and tranny. I plan to run a 4 banger in it, maybe hop it up a bit. I'm super pumped on the build. It's my first time building something this old. So far I have just gave the chassis a good cleaning and gave it a few coats of paint. I hope to get some work in later this week, and I plan to update this as I go!

Some parts showed up right before I went away for the weekend. Just got home and unboxed them. New rumble seat pan and rumble floor pan. I went with the flat style for a sedan, because I am going to be running bucket seats up front.
So I got the seized up four banger that came with the roller delivered today from the previous owner. Opened it up to find it's been rebuilt and has 60 over Pistons. These parts don't look like they have many miles on them. Some marvel mystery oil and a 3/4 drive ratchet, and I had the engine turning over nice and smooth in under 20 mins. What head was on that motor? Looking at the parts stacked on that pallet it looks like a high compression head sitting there behind that trans and bell.

OK the Combustion chambers don't look stock is why I mentioned it. When I get enough dollars saved I am going to get one of the new castings of the Winfield crows foot that is being newly produced by a HAMBer. Good luck with the build.
Brandon, Be sure to check for piston clearance with the Thomas head. Mine (original) didn't have a recess about the piston and this combined with the fact that my pistons come up slightly over the top of the block created a situation that didn't work. I sure like the look of the Thomas head. The attached pictures are from the 2012 LA Roadster show. The only thing I would do different is to run a reproduction aluminum fan and polish it. Thanks for the heads up, but I will most likely be running a repro. I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with them.
Intake manifolds can be sourced from most of the model A suppliers to suit the Stromberg 97. I am not sure if some are better than others. Otherwise you can look for an original intake such as a Burns etc. BCCHOPIT here on the HAMB ( http://www.waccustoms.com ) makes headers and intakes, good quality work from all accounts.
Looking but not yet seeing the PRE-WAR part of the build. What do you plan to do to define that part of the theme? There has to be more than tearing off the fenders and outfitting from an Honest Charley catalogue. The POST-WAR was a much richer field to play. Unfortunately after the war the police spent too much energy to suppress the young rodders expecting anarchy to follow. Now that so many of us are grey haired oldsters things are somewhat different.
