I don't recall why this wasn't classed as a Street Roadster, but no doubt there was something in the construction that kept it out of A/SR. It's WAY too long since I had the conversation with the crew member to remember.

With that, I DO remember that sadly this car crashed on its first pass of the day. The driver was badly injured, but at least not life-threatening. That is one of those visuals that has stuck for 40+ years.

It may just have had to do with a more favorable class index, nothing to do with car mods. Or even who else showed up at a particular race. Street Roadsters could run as altereds, but traditional altereds couldn't fit into a Street Roadster class, because of the extensive body and chassis mods allowed in Altered.

Its kinda like if your kid had major league talent he could play in the majors, but a major leaguer most certainly couldn't play on a little league team.

These guys were better known for their AA/GS '33 Willys cars, but the blown Altered is pretty cool.

Bowers, Paris & Reeds "Mother-In-Law" might have been just one of the many fuel altereds, but it was one of the first to run 200 MPH.

    Only a couple today.

Westland, Michigan's Dan Parker bought this outdated Logghe Funny Car chassis for a dollar-store price and then repurposed it as a record-holding B/Altered. Dan's homebuilt, injected 426 Hemi had plenty of power and was a force in NHRA Division 3 Comp Eliminator.

The above Winged Express pictures were Willie..."in spirit"...right ?!
MUCH too late in the calendar for Willie to be driving much of anything.
    Still very cool though.

    Nice pics.

A wad of foam rubber in the chute pack will make it look "complete". I use one because the original ribbon chute on my Logghe car is now a collectors item. Its pink and orange - it may have once been Shirley Muldowney's, but that's another story.
