Interior looks like an executive suite!!!

 

Great picture @dmorago !!! What class did you run and what years did you race your Willys? Were there any other Willys coupes that you raced against in those days. What color was your paint?

@willys36 yes it does look like an executive suite inside or maybe the galley of a wooden ship and the steering column has a simular angle to a VW hippie bus but it is interesting and was probably done a long long time ago and you don't see many cars with Ford Cammer motors, especially a light Willys. The car must have been a terror if you could get it to hook up. Also it looks like it had a recent Wheel swap. I think that it would look better with some vintage Magnesium Wheels. Also check out the 1942 only wide dash trim with the Willys Americar emblem above it.

 

Yeah I seen the car go across the block at mecum in Indy,At 60,000 dollars and it was a no sale.I LOVE that car!!!

Never raced Airoso, but do remember it at Long Beach as well as the 'March Meet' Here's another shot of our Willys at the Beach. We were getting use to the low-air M&H's. Each launch we learned more. Enjoy, Dick

 

You are right, that paint looked great under the lights. The car hooked up well too, for me there is nothing else like a Willys pulling the wheels. Do you have any idea where the car is now?

 

I've been told it found its way to Europe, maybe Germany. Sad, to think.

 

Would this have been a kandy paint like root beer? Love to get a look just like that but not a Kandy to make touch ups easier.

 

Paint was from 1954 Buick's color slate, it's called Mandarin Red. Depending on the light, time of day, or evening lights, the color had all kinds of shades. Very interesting color for the Day. Dick M

Planning my next project to build one just like this Holden bodied one. Have to start with a sedan probably ,prefer TJR body, and make the panels to suit.

 

What years were these Australian Willys sedans with the split rear windows made and which body maker made them?

There are so many differences it's amazing, it seems to be a 39 with the extra 1/4 windows ala 41, the vent window on the rear door, split rear window ala coupe and the trunk has the bustle trunk shape but a flat door opening. It's wild!

Yes it is very interesting I wonder if it came that way from the factory or is one that someone pieced together.

 

El I don't think it was pieced together that trunk area doesn't match any other Willys model pieces. That 38 panel with what looks like coupe doors definitely has that Australian look, as does the sedan. My guess is Holden.

The last one pictured was a Holden bodied one. You can tell by the extra step in the body line. This is completely stock and the rear windows are reused when making these into a coupe. They had the split rear window from 37 to at least 39 as this stock one shows. They also had a taller front windshield on the Holden ones as well as the front fenders not meeting the leading edge of the door and have a section of cowl in between.

Thanks for the information Gojeep. There are quite a few differences in the Australian Willys. The rear windows on the sedan being correct for a coupe does make it easier to do a coupe conversation like this.

 

Glad you found that one as was actually looking for it to post for you. Can see you can use the back half of the rear door window frame to complete the front door. Can you do that with the US models as well?

 

Yes you can, that is a trick for making low buck steel coupe doors. The difference is that the garnish moulding won't be removable like the factory coupe door.
