Customs 1959 ford custom 300 highway gears

  1. Although Ford did list several ratios for 59 Fords, certain ratios were only used with certain combinations. I believe your 6 and 3 speed car will have 3.70s if unmolested. That was common for a 223 3speed non OD, 2.69s were normally used on 352s with 3 speed automatics, 2.91s with 332s and 2 speeds, 3.10s with a 292 auto, 3.56s with 292 3 speed manual. My current 59 2 door sedan has 2.91s (332 2 speed), my old 57 Ford Sedan Delivery had 3.89s (272 3 speed non O/D), my 57 Custom 300 had 3.56s (272 3 speed non O/D). Your 59 will have a 9" rearend with 28 spline axles, which were pretty common, however the 57-59s usually had a shorter pinion yoke than many later 9"s, and used an oil filler in the case, many 60s Ford cars did not have a filler hole in the case. If you are planning to keep the 223, I would look into swapping in a Borg Warner T5 from a 5.0 Mustang. Adapter plates are available, you can even keep your current clutch. Between the syncronized 1rst gear, closer ratios, and Overdriven 5th gear, the T5 is a great trans for low to moderate powered engines.

  2. Sounds about right, mine with the 3.56 is a little lower, but I have 235/75-15 tires on the rear.
