To get the steering rod from the cowl to the hub positioned to where it was pleasing to the eye I had to make the arm that bolts to the spindle. I started with a S/S rod about an inch thick and turned it down except for the ends which I taped for bolts then cut it in half. I ran a string to figure out how much to bend the rods upward. I then machined a round piece and but a tapered hole in it for a tie rod and welded it all together with a plate in between. I may yet smooth the welds a little more and re-buff.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Thanks for all positive feedback guys!
So I wanted to use some Speedway biscuit engine mounts with the engine plate but wanted to keep the rivit look and not bolt them on as designed. I machined a 3/4 pin with a step on the end, I drilled two holes in the frame, one 3/4 on the inside and one 3/8 on the outside. The pin is welded on the outside frame and on the inside the engine mount overlaps it with a 1 inch hole and then I welded the frame, pin, and mount with one pass (see picture of mock up in the vise) . You cannot see this from above. Then I rosette welded the bolt holes to the frame and I will later drill and add the rivits when it gets [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]blown apart.

  9. Probably more a Swiss watchmaker given his accuracy and cleanliness. However a surgeon is expected to work accurate and clean too, at least my expectation. ;)
Anyway I enjoy every new post and the progress he makes with his roadster. The hours he already spent on it must be enormous.

I'm thinking your axle is going to hit the frame in a hard bump / pothole in the road. This doesn't look like much clearance.

You're correct, it was a little low when that picture was taken. I'm using a Posies spring that only has two leafs and comes with spacers to make up the difference. In this picture I have the spacers under the spring, since then I have moved them to on top and now have plenty of room for travel.

I just saw a Rolling Bones built roadster today (coming in from Alabama for the LARS) and the axle was hitting the frame on both sides so bad that the paint was all chipped off on both. He was running an OE Ford forged axle, but with any aftermarket axle, I'de be worried it would break under stress.

These are some pictures of the battery mounts for duel 6 volt Optimas and the cradle that is attached to the inner structure that the gas tank bolts to. The gas filler hole on the tank ended up directly under the roll bar tubing, bad planning on my part, so to fix it I machined a thick wall sleeve that the filler can pass through and welded it in. Then made a mount for the gas filter.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

While mounting the heater I realized to get the heater hoses to pass through the firewall I need to come up with some bulkhead fittings to fit my needs. Nothing available on the market that I liked so I made my own.[IMG] Starting with some 5/8 swedgelock type fittings I cut the threaded portion off.[IMG] I then cut some groves in some 5/8 tubing. [IMG][IMG] I then welded the tubing to the swedgelock and a washer to the tubing to act as a stop and then welded the threaded portion to the washer.[IMG] Now I can use the original nut to tighten to the firewall. [IMG][IMG][IMG] I was able to put the heater control valve directly into the swedgelock for a cleaner install.

That was some great original thinking and you pulled it off real nice.

  18. Amazing, just another detail about a minor issue, how to solve it and outstanding execution. That's what I like about this thread.

Been working on getting things mounted under the dash. Curved a piece of channel to run wires from the floor area up to the fuse block.[IMG][IMG][IMG]
Made some mounts for the E brake handle and welded them to the inside firewall plate.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
Added a cross piece to the lower part of the firewall plate so I could install some S/S couplings. Brake lines will from the master cyclenders to the couplings, which some of will be seen even once the dash is in place, but looks kinda cool to me. From there the brake lines will be hidden and then pass through the firewall wall with bulkhead fittings, one on each side for the front brakes and one for the slave cylinder. As stated many times before, unreal workmanship! With you as a teacher, I can't wait to see what your son, Kyle, is doing in 10 years. He'll never need to look for a job. That's your BEST work, Dad. Congrats.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I've learned a great deal from the build/how to threads here on the H.A.M.B. and don't consider myself in the same league as many of the craftsman that post them, so if any of the stuff I post helps someone else I'm just paying it foward. Thanks again.
