Here's a fresh face from the Carzz website.
Kind of Gary Chopit/Voodoo Larry inspired, no?

Mo , Where is the white and blue shoebox from. It looks very similar to a flame thrower that is often seen here in Dearborn Mi

  4. Wow, that's bitchin'! Has that crazy, over-the-top east coast style! I'd almost bet that Mr. Jack Hughes had a hand in those hubcaps, too! E

Sorry Speed', I found that on a Web search.

If it doesn't have flame throwers, I don't know why not!
I love everything I see about this car, and the more I look, the more I see!

The flame layout is better than perfect, and the cohesiveness of design and originality are seldom seen.
    PLUS...

Picasso once said "There is no great beauty without some irregularity." (Deep!)
This Shoe's mods, as a whole, would appear better suited to the bigger Merc, but the overall results would have been less outstanding!

    But WAIT! There's MORE!

Zoom in, and check out the headlight rings. They look like '61 Ford tail light rings, or those Imperial hubcap pieces used on the Jade Idol headlights. But bigger.
And while you're zooming, don't miss the molded flames on the side pipes shroud.

  6. You've got quite an eye 'Mo. I had missed all those little details until you suggested to zoom in and take a closer look. Thanks for pointing them out..........E

  7. That's Bob Frize car Shaboom. He's from the Downriver area and owns a few Winfield and Oz Welch cars

I bet Zeke has got a swag goin' on! His Merc is definitely not one that falls into the category of "just another chopped Merc". The restrained use of the silver scallops contrasting the brilliant blue makes for a very tasteful presentation.

I'm not tired of Joe Bailon's kustom shoebox. (pics borrowed from Joel Guevara)

Sometimes it is kool to look back in time. My Merc has gone through some changes. Lol!
This is what it looked like when I bought it from a friend of mine..

    Before Merc rear.JPG

This is the concept drawing that was in Rod & Custom Magazine that inspired my friend to build the Merc.

I had to borrow the money to buy it so it took a while before I could make any changes. The Merc is sitting on a complete 78 Cougar chassis so it drove a lot better than it looked. I guess that is not saying much...

After I was rear-ended, I started making positive changes. (God may have been tired of looking at it...) Added the '51 rear quarters the Caddy back bumper and swapped the grill and front bumper.

Ran out of money so it went through some other changes... (Not all good)

Gary Mundy started the repair work on the front end by grafting '51 Merc front fenders & head light buckets.

I drove the Merc this way a few years than Ralph Schindel started a major kustom improvements. Converted it to a two door cut off the rest of the nose and a lot of other stuff that needed attention.

Again drove the wheels off of it for years and ran into some rust issues in the lower quarters. Dustin Milligan cut out the rust in the lower quarters. Another major redo... :(

The only part of the Merc that we hadn't changed is the back part of the front fenders and the top. Wow, what journey. So thankful and Blessed that I've had so many friends help me out along the way...

Great trip dowm memory lane. First saw the car at Ark City, Last Run in purple so I guess you were the owner then (before we had met). I have to say that old Merc is lucky it found it's way into your garage. Not sure anyone else would have had the vision to take it to where it is today. Thanks for sharing those.

  24. Great story Mick--complete with nifty pics! You and your Merc have had a great journey together. I'm sure you wouldn't trade your Merc and the memories you have together for all the tea in China.
Ralph was a great guy. Neat to know he had a hand in your car's rebuild to koolness. He is missed..........E

Mick, sometimes the best laid plans of mice and men do not go exactly as they were intended...I'm really glad you put that Merc back to looking like a Merc...

Glad you saved the Merc Mick! The only thing it needed when you bought it was some sweet pastel paint with heartbeat graphics and some pink and turquoise tweed interior! LoL! :p
