So here's the deal: The ol' man is gettin a new hip on Wednesday, and he'll need some style when he's hobbling around the hospital with those pin-up nurses. I'm going to pinstripe his crutches and cane, but I've never done anything on a tube. Any hints/tips/pictures for pinstriping on small diameter tubing (~1" diameter)?

I imagine a vise or clamp arrangement would be handy...

I guess I hadn't thought about it from that perspective. I was more concerned about the rounded surface pushing the hairs apart and making my lines widen.

  4. You'll probably have to rotate the part as you work.

Or keep the design very narrow.

Tread lightly, keep your supports finger(s) on the side. If anything, supporting against the side as you work the top might actually help with pulling lines. I did a bike frame, sorry no pics. Unkl Ian's right. Angle is everything, and rotating the piece will be much more consistent than trying to lean into it in all kinds of odd angles. Great idea, by the way. Hope to see some pics when your done.

Wow. I'd like to see that, maybe the crutches won't be so bad after all...

I'll be sure to post pics, either here or in next Friday's show. The cane is black, I'm planning on pearlescent blue and metallic silver stripes. The crutches are bare aluminum, and I have no idea about what colors I want to use. Any ideas?

  12. 1-Shot Metalic Silver sucks big time.
1-Shot Pearl Blue or Purple are nice, but usually not for striping.

I've got both colors but haven't striped with either of them yet. Why don't you like them?

  14. The Silver is water crap, that doesn't cover or stand up in the weather.
If I REALLY need Silver,I will mix the pigments from the bottom of the can
    into a medium gray.

Try it on a test piece first.

For a black cane,I'd consider Vermillion and Bright Red.
On bare aluminum,I'd consider Black,and/or Purple.

Here's the finished product. Based on Unkl Ian's input, I strayed from my initial color scheme and did an orange and ivory combo instead.

I struggled with some of the ivory lines, but all in all it turned out pretty good considering my experience level. My dad's hip replacement is tomorrow, I'll see what feedback he gets when I visit the hospital tomorrow night.
