Thanks for the post and description. Info like that makes me believe more that that 50 may have survived. Dad worked some of those orchards in Cali after he got out in 55.

As mentioned earlier I will be traveling to Camp Roberts May 4th. If any ones knows someone with a 50 in that area and would be interested in letting me take a few photos with it please PM me.

I've been looking on google maps at the parade filed at the camp. It's just off the 101. I'm trying to determine what area the photo was taken. Only clues are the trees, one story building and the shadow. I'm thinking it was parked along Arizona street, west side of the field. I'll get a better idea once I'm there. Going to try a take a few pics there if permitted, But Don't even know if any of those building are still standing. You can see some from the google street view.

    Thanks again to all

Paid a visit to Camp Roberts where the Merc Pic was taken.
They have a great museum there. Did not find any info on who may of owned the merc.

did find the spot where my Dad took this photo in 1953.

took a photo of my Dads old truck on the same spot 60 years later

Thank you for sharing what is a spectacular video...your Dad would have been proud of you and your son. I wish you the best of luck with the research on the Merc.

Neat to see you build your Dad's truck. I wish I had my Dad's old 54 Ford truck. It was worn out back in 1970 though. My Dad was just a year older than yours. I miss mine too.

    Thanks
    I apriciate your comments.

I am fortunate to have gotten my Dads old truck back.

These threads come up time to time here. Folks looking for thier Dads old ride.
In my case it was just a cool old picture from 1953 of Dad and a 1950 Merc.

    Curious more than anything else.

Great video and your son learning the skills. Sure your dad would be real proud now you've gotten his truck back and restored. Love the blue!
Thanks for sharing and hope you can find info on the Merc.

  10. Looking closely at the background it appears that the photo could have been taken at the
Fort Ord Station Hospital administration building T-3010.

    fortord1940sc.jpg
Notice the double windows and the double post on the porch.

Also the exposed rafters,I guess all the Forts had similar construction but from what I have see the long barracks at Camp Roberts were 2 story buildings.

Am I a military historian,,no,but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night!:) HRP

    That's amazing
That building you posted looks similar

Visited Camp Roberts last year and went to the museum and drove around the base a little. Most the barracks and buildings around the parade ground have been demolished. We did find a few single story building left.

The curator told me the pic may have been taken in front of an admin building just as you stated HRP.
Here is a pic of a similar building we found at Camp Roberts last year.

This thread is a few years old now, thought this will be a good day to give it a bump
The curiosity on the 50 mercury is still there.

This morning my 7 year old sons' Cub Scout Pack will be placing flags at the headstones of those who have served and passed on , at our local cemetery.
A great honor for him and Myself.

Thank you to those who have served
We remember and pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

We will be driving to the cemetery in my late Dads 1950 Chevy pickup.

Great story and info. I just wanted to chime in and say I was stationed at Camp Roberts from 83 -86. There were still buildings like that around the parade grounds when I was there.

    Bump for Dad,

Mom has recently been reunited with Dad

She had told me she remembered handing my Dad the $300 to buy the 50 chevy truck in the early 70’s

I remember her teaching me to drive when I was a kid in the 50 truck and the 66 ford falcon we had.

So grateful I still have the truck

  24. If ever an old post needed to be brought back to life on the first page of this forum, it's this one! It should be bumped up like this at least once a year around this time.

We all need to be "updated" occasionally. Thanks!
