Customs 39 Custom Ford Conv. Survivor-Ray Cass Revisited

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by LighthouseLady, May 14, 2016.

  1. Hi everyone, in case you didn't see my other post I'm Joy, Ray's oldest daughter. My Dad had a post/thread back in 2007 about his '39 that was in Garage Magazine, some other pics of him & his cars over the years. Dad wanted to thank Al aka ZERK for all the nice things he posted, Mel aka DIRTEST DEVIL for his help and Kevin MOOSEANDSQURL53 for posting car pics in that older thread. He wanted me to help him bring a new current thread here. This will be about him, mostly the 1939 Custom Ford and also various cars he's had over the years. He finally got a laptop and is online! I have the digital camera and scanner so together we are going to do this! My husband Kevin (Mooseandsqurl53) will also be here to help with information. You can ask questions, Dad will see them and I can post the answers. I'm showing him how to do things online so hopefully he will be able to reply directly to any of your questions about him or his cars or car questions in general. Some photos may be from the previous post, but since that is now 9 years old I don't think it matters if they get repeated. Hope you enjoy.........

    Hello Joy,Ray's oldest daughter.
After going through that 8 year old thread a couple of days ago about your dad I mentioned it to
my nephew Benito and it also brought a smile to his face because he was only 2 or 3 years old when he
first met your dad and now he is 27 with his own cars which include a chopped 51 Merc and a Two Lane Blacktop type 55 Chevy ....so many stories....so many memories ....so many friends over the years....and
we will keep it that way as long as we are able to push the pedal, steer the wheel....and see the white line!
Here's to my long time Friend Ray Cass and Family.
    See you soon.

Wonderful story, and great to see that someone who loved and kept his custom all these years. I've seen the car, and somewhat knew about it, from local cruises here.

Hi, everyone, it's been a long time since I've posted here. My last post was in the previous thread about Ray. Lighthouselady has been my wife for 40 years, so, the '39 has been around the whole time, 2/3 of my life. Ray and I have had many adventures, with and without the '39, and the '39 and I have had some adventures, with and without Ray. Back in the 80's I took it drag racing in Englishtown for the Old Time Drags. It was still blue then, with the old 6 volt system and 1 2 bbl carb, but, it did OK nonetheless. Here' 39drags-2tn.jpg 39drags-1tn.jpg s a couple of pics.

That is the Jack Lentz famous for his 1932 Golden Rod Custom Roadster, a 1953 Studillac and the 1953 Studebaker. Dad first bought the '39 in 1956, he worked for Jack at that time as a body man. We had no garage so Jack would let Dad use the shop after work hours to work on the car.

It's a real kick to see these old photos! I never saw the car with spotlights before. Good going helping Ray get his pics onto the HAMB.

  16. Thanks for sharing these photos! Much appreciated. You have a great collection of cars, I love that you've had one since you were 16 and one that was your Grandfather's!

  17. Here is a pic of the '39 when it was blue. Baltic Blue which was a '50 Olds color. The top was white back then, done by Carl Mueller Upholstery Asbury Park NJ, back in the good old days was only $65!

Often a guy just "nailed it" when it comes to doing a classy custom. This surely is one of those times. Other than color, maybe some new shoes to jive with the times, still the soul of that car lingers. Thanks for sharing the memories. It's also a real 1st class act to have a functioning chopped convert. So much better than a Carson. Stunning...

Would it be possible to get a bigger scan of this pic? I have a chopped '39 convert.

  22. More photos & stories are coming. I scanned lots of pics of the 39 and other cars of Dad's over the years. Also pics of friends cars. Little by little I will post a pic and Dad gives me a little back history about the car or a funny story to go with it!

  23. I'll see what I can do for you. My hubby has already scanned this, not sure where the actual photo is right now. Are any of the photos above good for what you need? (The current ones where it is black)

That's what's it is all about. My dad is a hot rodder and I got it from him at a young age. If it makes your dad happy then it is a great opportunity to share a common interest and make great memories. Some of my Heros are old timers. That is the cool thing about hot rods they make people feel young again and you are not segregated into age groups. I love to hear the old timers tell stories about the 50s and 60s and them cruising and racing and how things used to be at the drive in.

Hi Joy! Thanks for starting this thread up, I'm glad to see Ray is doing well. It's a wonderful story and awesome to get the backstory on such a killer custom. It's been a number of years but I had a blast hanging out with your dad and talking about his car, the custom scene in Jersey... all really good stuff. Please keep posting pics and stories if you have them and send our best to Ray. I hope to see him at some shows soon

George, Depending on your computer, you can store the file and then open it and possibly enlarge it on your computer.
