I actually bought an engine today. It is a 21 bolt ford flathead. Pretty good looking project. It has almost everything. Except right side waterpump and some small shit i might not even know since i've never messed with these engines before. The package had a top loader also. That is all i know.. Where it came from and when and what year etc unknown. What type it is etc..

If i understand right the serial BB18 4061374 tells me that this engine is 1937.. Used in a ford 78.. That is all i could find out at vanpeltsales.com That is by the numbers in the serial. Nothing about the meaning of the BB..

 

Unless I miss my guess, the BB refers to the large, heavy-duty trucks that Ford built.

 

If I was still taking care of her, Washington Blue would be my choice.

Just a minor progress on the car. Just dont have enough time to start on the flathead engine. I got all the valves off and now i'll have to get rid of the old head studs. Those are pretty tight in.

Chassis proportions are right on. Maybe I missed it, but what's your wheelbase?

 

You would have to ask that from F-6Garagerat. I guess it should be almost stock..

 

It is 103" (stock ford) like it should be. Never was a fan of the stretched out in front frame style.

 

Got this today. It makes things alot easier than building the other engine whole winter. My kids keeps me busy so this will help alot. I just need to figure out what do i need to convert this to 12volts since the car is 12 volts already.

 

You need only 12v alternator or generator and 12v coil.

 

I Guess i have generator that fits this engine. The engine that came with this car had original style generator that was redone to handle 12 volts. Points are ok with the 12 volts? And what about the starter motor?

 

Starter enjoys to have 12v but use common sense when starting. Points work, but maybe you need
coil whit resistor.

 

How do you even fit 12v coil to this type of distributor?

The 21 stud has this flywheel.. What is it?



Then i have a spare flat type flywheel.





And a pressure plate with ford number 71-7570 that does not fit that flat flywheel.



Im a bit messed up here what way to go to get working clutch

 

Should fit this toploader..

 

If i would take the edge of the flywheel off on the lathe the pressure plate would fit. What do you think are these parts gonna work with that gearbox?



And the clutch disk that i guess will fit this.. Upper one.

What clutch would fit that? Macs has some bb 7563 pressure plate but nothing written of the physical size..

 

Took the flywheel off from the engine to compare it to the flat one i have.. What do you think.

 

At a minimum I'd say the big one is way too heavy for a fun hot rod.

The one with the big rim on it is the stock early flywheel. It takes a clutch/pressure plate like a Model A.

 

There's a thread on the different flywheels a few days ago.
The big one is for a kater engine & doesnt interchange w an early one.

 

Yes that what i thought also. It is the original flywheel from this particular engine. 85hp 21 stud. But what clutch kit does it accept? Since all the kits that i have seen has "long" style pressure plate.. And that flywheel have 12 evenly spaced bolt pattern..Can i just go and get a Model A clutch kit? I guess at least the clutch friction disc has a different spline in it? Or do i buy just a Model A pressure plate and get some other 9" clutch disk with right spline?

Tried to find that thread but did not find it..

 

Ordered Model A type pressure plate and 9" disk from Macs.. Then i bought Lucas GXE3101 12 volt generator from Ebay UK and a regulator for it. Coil adapter kit will come from Finnish hot rod shop and the starter relay from the same place. Then i would have everything to convert this engine to 12 volts and can try to assemble it to the frame.. Exhaust is something i have to figure out also..

 

It's on.. Adjusted all the fingers to the same hight and now i'll have to check if the bearing of the toploader will work correct. Diameter is ok but how much does it move since i think it is a littlebit too far away.
