Looking for any info on this car it's a 1960 Pontiac Catalina here the deal I bought it off OZ welch he bought it in 06 off eBay in whitefish Montana that guy bought it off another guy who was on title still so I contacted him he found it in a wrecking yard in 03 in Iowa doesn't remember what yard. The car seems to have had a gold flake painted frame, suspension, inner fenders ect. The outside was a metallic gold while the jambs bed and underside were white.. I believe it was a show car at one point it has a chrome radiator support, heater box, clutch linkage, dampner, accessories on engine and head bolts ect. Kinda detailed out at one point someone has put 70 chevelle headlight rings on it but I don't think that's how it was originally as there's other metal work n lead under those like something else was on it at one point. Interior is red now but that's not how it was as dash was gold and I found a white n gold tuck n roll visor in the car kinda makes sense that's it was any info is appreciated . Not on here much but I'll try Email Vonhitchkustoms@ gmail Or Vonhitchkustoms on IG Thanks in advance
Was it based on an El Camino, or a Pontiac wagon, or maybe a Pontiac sedan? Hard to tell. Neat car though, hope you can find some history on it, would be a great one to see restored to it's former glory.
It's kinda even more impressive knowing that. Looks like they used an El Camino donor roof and door tops possibly? Any pics of the interior or dash?
I like it, but then I have always liked one of designs that kind of look factory built. A lot of the early GM's were built on similar platforms and some common parts like the windshields were interchangeable. Good choice on what definitely looks like a 59 or 60 ElCamino roof section on the 2dr Catalina body. Really keeps that factory look. Add a Pontiac Station Wagon tailgate and it will look like Pontiacs version of the 60 Chevy ElCamino design.
I wonder if the factory had anything to do with it. I know that they built a 59 Pontiac El Camino(possibly 2) for possible production but it never came about. I have a pic of it in the shop ;will try to dig it out. Wonder if it may have started out as a Canadian Pontiac 2 door wagon. They made those up to 1960.
Acording to the data plate it started life as a two door Catalina not a wagon. The roof and bed sides are def all elcamino. I have seen the factory prototypes they were 59s n it died there also doubt the factory cut the Elco apart w a torch!!! Oh I forgot to mention it has 1960 Phoenix roof scoops gas welded on the Elco roof. The back glass is about 3.5" shorter than an elcamino and the Catalina hardtop was something like 2" shorter than an elcamino or sedan having said that the windshield is chopped about 1.5" from the Catalina hardtop as it's totally apparent n easy to measure the post stainless was just lapped the build was prob 1962 to 1965 hope someone has seen it in a lil book. Good guess it was built then as it has 62-64 Pontiac bucket seats in it
I saw that car in my ol' buddy John's garage in Omaha sometime in the early 80s. I remember the droopy peaks over the tail lights and the gold paint. Had a 389 in it. It's been over 30 years and John moved away. Was in pretty nice shape back then.
Rocky really that's a clue and yes it still has the 389 with a tripower and a stick. Do you know his last name?
Way cool - the license plate appears to be from Madison county, NE (Norfolk) if that helps in your search.
I dislike almost all elcaminos, but that one really has a cool shape. Are you thinking of trying to recreate the gold flake showcar? Or give it your own take with a traditional vibe?
This was posted on fb today on the Pre 62 Radical Kustoms page: "Here's a pic of the el ca maniac as John Volcek called it back in the day"
How cool is that, and how ironic is the timing on that being posted. Looks like a great car to investigate the history on. Can't wait to hear the story!
Yea thanks to rocky I found the owner I posted that on the face book page and IG the car was show car in the 60s but not an elcamino that happened later in it's life I talked to the second builder who did the Elco conversion he has all the history on it tons of pics even a build book of the work he and two other guys did on it
