I would guess it would be similar to the coil over, with the leaves acting as a track link?

What you see in that picture is a broken weld. Unless the manufacturer elected to use some horribly inferior filler material, this would be ER70S. The 70 in that designation is 70,000psi filler material. A quarter-inch wide bead around a 3" tube has at-minimum 2.3562-square inch contact area (assuming only surface attachment). That would be 164,934psi to fracture.

Mild steel yields at ~43,000psi. If that were a sound weld, and the forces that you are describing would have bent the tubes and center-section well before breaking the weld.

This is, plain and simple, a bad weld.

Thanks, I didn't think a 2800# car with, maybe, 270hp would be the culprit.

You now know the price SoCal puts on their reputation, and it ain't the price of a 9in rear end housing! Pretty sad.

  8. I just got me a John's housing and axle's......Top Notch, Great Service, and everything I had spec'ed out. Quick turn around, and price. After this thread= inspected very carefully, although I don't have x-ray vision. I would say honestly= If I break this thing, NOT that it fails, I have something wrong= too much HP, and I'm going to be throwing some at it. I usually refrain from recommendations, but- my ass is on the line here, and I feel secure with my purchase, and have to say this product is top of the line. Check you tube video's to see for yourself.... Any Q's- You can PM me.

You know, maybe.....just maybe, it's time to just pull your pants up, buy a new pair of underwear on the way home and call it a fucking lesson. Find someone else to give your money to and......well, move on. Sometimes there comes a day when you just have to say, "What tha fuck." Move on.

He already has a replacement in the works. Would that be the same as he already bought some new underwear?

Everyone that has looked at it said they thought it was machine weld, not on target and too cold.

  17. Yes it looks like a machine weld, set up incorrectly. I guess no one was paying any attention.

  19. Looks like 95% of the weld is on the center section.

Wow, if that was a machine weld that far off center I wonder how many went thru like that before (if) the machine was reset.

Just unboxed a Johns 9 inch housing and looked it over carefully. The tubes are welded on the inside as well as the outside machine weld.

How much does a bare housing cost from SoCal?
I know locally I can buy a big bearing f-150 housing for less than a $100 and get it narrowed
to any width I want for around $250-300. And that's from a pretty reputable race car fab shop.

About 3 weeks ago I paid 600 for a So-Cal shortened for a model a on 32 frame. It has their forged spring hanger, ladder bar and shock brackets on it.

I guess with all the brackets, hangers and all it would pretty much be a wash on cost then.

Hey guys, I am a 17 year employee of Currie Enterprises. SoCal Speed Shop has not used our housings in many years. They did at one time, but "less expensive" options came on the market and they went that direction. Ours are made here in southern California, USA. I would prefer not to go into any further detail because I don't want to say anything negative.
The housing below I grabbed off of our welding shop rack just now and snapped a picture of in my studio for your reference. All housings manufactured by Currie (in at least the last 5-7 years) will have the welded-on badge and all Currie housings, back to at least the early 90's that I'm aware of, have the 5 or 6 digit order number stamped on the tube. The OP stated early on that it was not a Currie
