The Lighthouse on Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach, Ca. 3 doors toward the pier was Taco Bills home of the original taco burrito. Damn they were good. Across the street was Pios best meatball sandwich in the world.

So cool!....I met Sky King, with his airplane "Songbird'' on a semi-truck flatbed trailer at a local fair...as a child in North Bend, Oregon, and got his autograph in the early 60's....not many remember him now, but he had a popular show back in the day! I believe the series ended in 62' or 63'....my mother even bought me a bicycle soon after, with his logo and advertising on it....fun memories!

Took that ride a few times, gives a person a little glimpse of how things use to be.

Not exactly. The Ohrbachs in this photo was on the North side of Wilshire and was there in the '50's. Later, Ohrbachs was in a building on the South side of Wilshire and to the West, 6060 Wilshire. That building had another occupant as offices after Ohrbachs folded and then became the Petersen Museum. It was closed for about a year for a major and somewhat controversial remodeling and just re-opened recently. Although the exterior is somewhat questionable, the interior is terrific and we enjoyed a recent visit.

There is some question that Disney competition was the cause of its demise. It was more likely the City of Santa Monica's re-development project which wanted to get rid of it as they "up-scaled" the area. Their project closed off street access to POP and caused a huge drop in attendance which made it easy for creditors to put the squeeze on and kill POP. When things like this happen, you can always follow the money trail and see who profited. Many famous landmarks in L.A. (Pan Pacific Auditorium, the Polar Palace, etc.) were victims of mysterious fires that burnt them to the ground. Hmmm....

Who remembers the TV advertisements' for Lou's Garages in LA back in the 50's? A ring job for $40.00.
