Technical 235 "M" Block?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by james1savage, Apr 21, 2016.

  1. I have a 235 from a 1960 chev truck, which I believe is Canadian (like me). I'm having some trouble with some of the castings numbers etc in the block. The "3769716" makes sense, but I'm not familiar with the "M" cast into the block below it in the pictures.

There are a few other areas on the block that usually show info that are blank, with only other info being found next to the distributor C512650 and on the other side of the block as shown in the below pictures.

Can anyone provide any insight into what the "M" means and any other info on the engine?

The distributor pad # is either a restamp or unique to Canada.

E 20 0 means May 20, 1960 casting date. Other than that, I can't help, I only have US info.

Patrick's , in Phoenix Az, can help you out. They have alot of information on stovebolt sixes, and many go fast parts as well.

Sent from my SPH-L600 using H.A.M.B. mobile app

  5. The C512650 number is stamped on the block located under the side plate as well, you can see it on the bottom right of the picture below. You can also the the M on the block under the 3769716

  6. I talked with Patricks, they didn't know what the M on the block meant or stood for. They did agree the engine is a '58-'62 235 from the 3769716 above the M.

Had a similar problem with a Canadian made Chev six I reckon is about a 1951. The serial number and casting number don't quite match any of the numbers listed on American sites.

And your reading it upside down ?

    Made well before Mexican production.
What does it have for crank & bore sizes - I'm leaning toward a rebuilder stamping the dist. pad & tappet chamber #s.

M 31-32-36-3800-4000 with RPO 40B the only thing I have ever saw that also was on a Chevy truck from Canada was "M for Maple Lead".

Perhaps the "M" is the casting foundry ID mark?

  17. What does Mickinen mean?

And I actually just acquired a 261 today from a '56 Pontiac that was Canadian, and has the M as well likes yours.
