Sad to report the death of Larry Slutter.

While working for Vels/Parnelli Jones Racing in the mid 70s, Larry helped develop the turbo version of the Cosworth F1 V8 engine for Indy car use. When the Cosworth became the mainstream Indycar engine, Larry headed the factory Cosworth engine shop in LA.
During my crew chief days at Indy, I was fortunate to have Slutter built Cosworths in my cars.

    Godspeed Racer! :(

Sometime back I posted these shots of a 'one and done' mystery car that was entered at Indy 56 as the H.B.T. Spl. for Bill Cheesebourg. 4x-7-a.JPG 4x-7-b.JPG

Was reading a article on Cheesebourg and there was this brief mention of the car which kind of explains it somewhat. I'm curious though, who bought it and where it was raced as I don't believe it ever raced again as a USAC Champ car. 4x-7-c.jpg

Yeah, I agree the bumper sure looks like Aggies, but Champ car stats shows it as a Lesvoskey car and I don't think (?) Aggie had a Lesvoskey upright prior to 56.

That front bumper sure looks like an Agajanian one as mentioned. Could it be that Lujie rebuilt an earlier Agajanian car? Or maybe Cheesbourg borrowed the bumper to put the car together? And after that what happened to the car? There is a #84 Holynski owned car that shows up later in 1956 but it's listed as a Kurtis. USAC was pretty firm on car registrations and unless something out of the ordinary happened you were pretty much stuck with a car number for the entire season.

Also, the guy standing toward the center of the photo with his hands in his jacket pockets (talking to another man with his hands on his hips) is Bob Owen. Bob was a longtime Dean crewmember that I later helped out on a Chevy II midget that his brother Jack drove. I remember Bob telling me that Clint Brawner had once assigned him as the chief mechanic on a Dean dirt car at the Speedway. USAC always required that a chief be with a car anytime it was being run and Clint was too busy with the other two cars. Until I saw this photo I always assumed that Bob was in charge of the Kuzma dirt car at some point. With Bob standing there I now think that this was the car that he told me about.

I wasn't smart enough to ask for any details at the time.

I also like his roll around Fleetwing tank in the background. Were these type of mobile tanks common?

I don't think they look alike, and I'm sure it's Sachs. He drove the car at Monza a few weeks later, maybe he posed in the car after making that deal.

Let me qualify that statement: I'm not sure if it's Sachs, but knowing what happened it's the most likely explanation. What I am sure of though is that it's not Weyant - that was my gut reaction when I first saw the pic, and upon examination the driver doesn't resemble him at all.

I could be wrong but didn't Mario Andretti make his USAC sprint debut in the rebuilt Wergland car later that year at Allentown?

Indyrjc, he was there in it. I have a picture somewhere. I don't know if it was a debut though.

The Jack Rounds picture is him performing the brake and back up test. The cars had to have a reverse gear.

I believe that 1960 was the last year that cars at Indianapolis were required to have a reverse gear. The brake test went on for several more years with officials making someone (usually a crew member) prove that the car had brakes by either having the car pushed a few yards or sometimes even having to restart the engine and move forward after a qualifying run.
