If you take some of that filter medium and just use a circle of it the diameter of the carb throat, there's no way it will flow enough air. It'll be like running with the choke on. There's a reason for those "pleats" in virtually all air filters. It's so there is enough filter area (square inches) of surface so that the filter does not have a significant impact on the airflow into the carb.

Here's a filter that can be made at home with hand tools.
It uses an off the shelf element for a Datsun.
    No flow restriction problems.
The unit can be configured for any number of carbs or injectors
just by a different bottom plate.

do you want filters or do you want traditional looks and dirt in the cylinders. it's a choice.

Yeah, and if these ever start to come apart and get ingested, you think that's any better than the dirt we were trying to keep out? Sanding media in my cylinders? No way.

  9. That what I was thinking. Nothing like abrasives in your intake charge!

  10. Gee, why not just use Brillo pads:)

  11. I was thinking of a slurry of sand suspended in Elmers glue today, almost like sintered brass fuel filters!?:D

I use fine mesh stainless steel kitchen strainers.

Place it flat down on a table and put the bottom of the frog scoop on it.

Trim the mesh around the base, leave about 1/4" extra material.

Start bending the extra 1/4" mesh by hand or for you sissies use pliers.

Push the mesh into the scoop and it should fit tight.

Put the scoop on the carb and drive.

You can also stretch a panty hose over the mesh before you slip it into the scoop. Put it on TOP of the mesh, works good but you ought to replace it once a month.

I never use foam, it's junk. Falls apart, goes down in the carb. One backfire is all it takes. Even the gas fumes deteriorate the foam. Remember those triangle shaped Edelbrock air cleaners? JUNK!

Small kitchen strainers have a nice dome on them then use a sheet of motorcycle foam trimmed to size wet with K &N filter oil.

Amazing. Guys will spend a small fortune on WWW's and chrome crap, but won't drop a dime and get the correct filters for a multi-carb (expensive) set up?
