Ok! Ben(firstibsteele) just made my point!
The walls DO talk, even if some jack wagon destroys what's left.
    Thanks Ben.
We now know how John found it.
How about some detail on that episode with the snake.
I am originally from South Texas, and by the way did I mention I hate snakes LOL!

    Ben,
I do have contact info for Jennifer (owner) and her mother. I'm happy to share it with you just message me here on the HAMB. I don't want to post her number but for those willing to pm me I'll share it.

All of the COE were pretty solid. Obviously there was what you see in the photos but you can tell these were purchased by a guy that planned on building them. Other than the crumpled ones they were good projects to start with.

I would like to have a few of them too but decided I like being married to Cynthia so I probably won't.

    Probably.

This goes back a few days when I was in Sierra Blanca TX. I stopped in to see Tom Ellison, the 91 year old owner of Ellison Motor Co.

Cynthia and I met Tom last year and listened to him tell his stories of living in this town since birth. Serving in WWII as a bombardier, then returning home to open this garage.

He survived 2 wives, both of which he loved dearly. He watched the town grow, then watched it fade when the interstate was put in. He has sold off some of the old signs that were NOT FOR SALE last year and spoke of updating his will to avoid "bickering" between his 70 yr. old kids when he is gone.

This year he took me thru his garages as if showing me what I could buy. Below are a few of the thinks I saw. I'll admit, I was so absorbed in his story that I missed taking photos of some stuff.

He is a living history book that sadly will be closed sometime soon. I wonder if he will be there next year.....

John, you sure know how to make a trip into an adventure of discovery. You are sharing the kind of stuff that catches my eye on a trip but I seldom take the time to stop and soak up the history like you do. I am really enjoying your posts. Thank you for sharing!

John, thx so much for the ridealong, loved e very page of it. At 78 I've gotten too old to do much in the way of road trips outside of the SouthEast, and it seems like most of the kind of stuff you were able to show us in this wonderful travelogue is long gone here in the South unless you get way back in the boonies, as the much rainer climate here has rusted away the old vehicles, and the tentacles of development have gobbled up lots of the old buildings that were abandoned when the interstates came through.
I was born and raised here in the South, and will be here now till I'm pushing up daisies, but in years past I traveled out West, but seldom was able to stop and enjoy the things that you've posted. In fact in hte mid to late 50s I was usually hitch hiking and could only stop where the driver stopped unless I wanted to get out and give up my ride!

Change of plans. I set up my outside vending spot at Viva this morning and thought I was prepared for the forecasted high winds. Mother Nature thought otherwise.

The wind lifted my canopies up as if a kid lost hold of his ballon in spite of the 8- five gallon buckets full of water that were intended to hold my canopies down. I managed to hold on while the whole set up went scooting across the parking lot.

That's it. Packed it all up and I'm driving home now.

Never did like Vegas much anyway; guess she just told me the same.

THAT BLOWS!! You weren't using that dehydrated water were you?

It's obvious that you love the road and it loves you. Thanks for taking us with you and for the introductions along the way.

  17. Damn just damn. Well you had a nice trip along the way. Met some folks, bought some stuff & best of it was safe so far, hope it continues. If you go thru ELY there is a nice train museum & the hotel has some interesting stuff also.

Nevada is weird. I pulled in for a cup of soup but apparently that is not what they're selling.

Awesome day today. Long lonesome stretches of highway.

This was heading north on 95 about an hour out of Vegas. The desert was in full bloom.

This is the little town of Goldfield. I passed thru here with my son about 15 years ago. I remember stopping for gas and pancakes but that place is long since closed.

This was the hotel. Check out the lobby. It's not hard to imagine this place full of people back in its hay day.

The drive out of Austin NM as the sun was setting was fantastic. It had been very windy all day but as the sun got lower in the sky, the wind subsided. The colors, air temp and complete absence of any other people made for a really special drive.

I happened on these old abandoned places and the light was perfect.

In the last few days of your travels, what thoughts have you had about an overcrowded world?
Your pics show a different reality.
The roads are there, let's get out and look for the Acme van.
