Um, everything gets in to the show.

This year I think the LSRU even "jumped the shark" with it's year cut off. Right smack center stage at the Austin Speed Shop booth, next to Showtime, was a beautiful Thunderbird. One built in 1966, with 1966 Texas plates on it. A '66 is completely different styling wise from a '63. So I'm not quite sure why there's even a year cut off shown anymore.

 

Every year it's the same....

Someone will piss and moan about a "non traditional" or too new a car.
It was my 3rd trip in 6 years to the show, a bunch of friends came from England, and all had a fantastic time too, if one or 2 or hell, 20 cars don't "fit your views" who really cares, shake your head....point, laugh, whatever floats your boat, but jeez....get over it...it's just a car show

Here’s the pics from our 2016 Lonestar Roundup adventure. We drove the ’49 all the way from Guthrie, Oklahoma and back; no trailers here!!! This post is written by Chase, son of Ludd (RuFFDaWG). Now if I can just get him to go with me next year. Might have to hogtie him and throw him in the trunk.

These pics aren’t in order but oh well.

On the way down to Austin we broke down in Denton Texas when the driver side thermostat locked up and failed closed. Started smelling antifreeze, then started seeing it steaming in the rearview, then saw the aftermarket temp gauge on the passenger cylinder bank start to creep up. We pulled off the highway and into a gas station and were really boiling over coolant at this point. Melted a plug wire too….. A stranger was nice enough to run up the street for us while we let the car cool off and grab two new thermostats, two new thermostat gaskets, some RTV, and another aftermarket temp gauge to install on the driver side cylinder bank. The factory gauge for temp in these cars are garbage, so no more relying on that. With two new thermostats and an aftermarket temp gauge on EACH cylinder bank we proceeded onward to Austin.

We later came to find that we were not only loosing coolant from somewhere but also brake fluid at an alarming rate…. Turned out to be a failed slave cylinder on the passenger rear side…. This meant we had to stop regularly to top off the fuel tank, the radiator, and the master cylinder.



This is a shot of me rebuilding the broken transmission. The overdrive unit is on the ground to the left. Cruising the highway with the overdrive kept the RPM at a sane level for the long range bombing run into Austin TX from Guthrie OK.

This was in Itasca Texas I think…. We were on the way back home on Sunday and had to stop to check the fluids. Also let us detour around some of the construction mess in DFW.

It was a great trip and driving down there in the ’49 was fun albeit a bit stressful from the breakdown in Denton to the massive brake fluid leak we later discovered far away from home….. I can’t wait to do it again. No trailers, no bitchin’. The flathead did great on the highway with the overdrive letting it loaf along at highway speeds without revving to the moon.
