Projects 30 Ford coupe build

it's a bit of a puzzle for sure. move one thing and it effects another. going to take my time and think it all through. i'm sure the vets of this work are laughing at me a little right now but it's part of the learning curve for me and part of the journey right? ha ha

 

Think how easy the next one will be

 

Ha! let's just get through the first one and then we can think about the next project! At least i have the Camaro to drive in the meantime. wish the coupe was done but just going to take time.

 

Scored a couple cool pieces for the build today at a swap meet in Vernon! Yes the heater says Chevrolet! I want it to work don't I?? the old fire extinguisher will look cool mounted in the car. Any guesses on the year of the heater? I didn't want to put a vintage air type unit in the car as I want to keep it simple so had my eye out for a little heater like this. Guessing it's a 6 volt, the guy I bought it from said I could run 12 volt to it no problem, it will just run the fan faster. Opinions on this? Will get it all figured out. On the way back we stopped at a couple spots where we have seen some old cars and we're looking at some of the body tags. Never heard of budd bodies before. Anyways a few cool pics!

 

Cool heater. Budd built bodies and wheels for many manufacturer's. The Late 31 Model A pick-up cabs were built by Budd.

 

that's cool, i have never heard of them before. I thought Fisher made everything!

 

Fabbed up the mounting bracket for the socal steering dampener yesterday. not done getting the bracket exactly they way i want it but close. i searched on the socal site if they offered a mounting solution for guys using these units with split bones but couldn't see anything so voila, build my own! something else just about off the list! stuck some ram horns i have on the motor yesterday. i am really torn what to do for exhaust. I have always been a header guy and would love to run lakestyle headers but not a fan of the look of the dump going underneath the frame and not sure i would want to put up with just baffles long term. what to do what to do?! someone decide for me!

 

LOL I just gotta get this one can't even pass it up.

Redundant would be calling it a 5 window coupe with 2 doors and 5 windows.

I am still tuning into this one by the way.

 

Maybe he was mad because he's all about 3 windows?

 

got my new bias ply's and ford deluxe hub caps today from Coker! Waiting for the wheels to get back from paint so i can mount them up! 4.50's up front and 7.50's out back. can't wait to see em on the car! also got the grille gently sandblasted yesterday and was happy with how it finished. couple little pin holes in the bottom but otherwise nice and solid. slowly but surely...

 

I don't think Larry's the type that gets mad; he strikes me as one who would get even!
But I'm sure he's just dispensing a bit of his knowledge to the uninitiated.

Great car- I'm addicted to Coupes no matter how many windows they have ( but am partial to the ones with 5). Good luck, have fun, be safe.

 

I'm sure he was busting my chops a little which is all good, I was just running with loudbangs comment. I thought for a long time I would only want a three window then I saw a specific 5 window duece that I fell in love with and that made up my mind a 5 window was for me. Or in this case an "A" because they only came with 5 windows! Ha ha

 

Threw the dash in to get some inspiration on a gauge layout. Don't really want to buy an off the shelf insert but there's also not a lot of square footage to be too creative. Looked at lots of pics of dashes but still not sold on anything specific yet. Any cool suggestions, lay em on me!

I like your car build big-time....and REALLY like that heater & fire extinguisher!!!....I didn't know Budd built bodies either....it's very Interesting!

 

I used an early Pontiac, fit and worked great!

 

One of these was on sale here about a month ago posted by "Hell's Hot Rods"- don't know what it came out of, I got mine from a buddy on a swap, and stuck an oil press. and temp gauge in. Originally had "Stewart Warner" in it, but they all were wrecked. Bezel was cool as hell though; it had a little bump at the top with a light in it.

 

That's a nice looking insert for sure, live the dash color as well

 

That's a cool set up and steering wheel really set it off. So many choices!

 

Interesting the way the dash is laid in like that. I can see I'm gonna have to take my time and think this out

4 foot X 10 inch 18 gauge with a bend at the bottom, fitted to the cross member between the cowl posts, weld a piece of angle on the bottom to stiffen it up ,and you've got a place to bolt your column drop too.
Nothing fancy, but cheap ,quick and lots of room. I leave the cowl top so it comes off, and build a framework under it to tie dash back to the firewall, and put my fuse panel in there. Take the top off and you've got full access to panel, wiring and the back of the dash for getting to the instruments.

Got one! This is behind the "Ensign" panel- nice that it's all visible and you can work on it standing up, not standing on your head UNDER the dash.

I love being able to get at everything like that. I am planning all that out as well right now. I hate seeing a nice car then seeing wiring that has no plan or proper layout and shit everywhere!

I have seen that insert as well. Lots to think of for sure.

 

Got my new tires mounted on the freshly painted wheels today and threw them on the car! Super happy with the look and the stance! Happy with the 7.50's and where they sit with the rear wheel well. Another step towards the build

 

Built the motor mounts yesterday. Used 3" pipe and capped with 1/4" steel. then machined the walls down to clean everything up. Notched the sides and took our time to get everything lined up nice and tight. Happy with how they turned out so far. Still a little bit of cleanup to do before getting the welded to the frame.
