History Vintage "Cageless" Midget Picture Thread

Jim, Lonsdale sports arena was a 1/3 mile paved track built for the midgets in 1947. it was a premier track in its time with stands all around. it ran on wed. nights and sunday evenings. It closed in 1956 when the Blackstone river flooded and wiped out 1/2 of the track. { It was built next to the river}. It was really in Cumberland, R.I. on Mendon Rd.

I'm looking for information and pictures of the number 10 Ford midget Sid Cook drove at Freeport in late 40's. I believe that Sid Cook is driving the midget located on the Pole of the picture below. Pictures of Sid are also wanted. Any information and\or pictures on the car or Sid would be greatly appreciated.

What the heck is happening?

 

I don't know anything about midget racers. But I bought this one at an estate sale about 2 weeks ago. Just because it looks cool.

 

rwilly, that looks like a 3/4 midget, with a narrowed down Model T body and maybe a foreign engine (MG? Healy?) with two SU carbs. Search info on 3/4 midgets.

 

Not a T/Q.

An Off Topic track roadster with an anemic engine. Suggest a Chevy in line 6, other flathead 6, a Ford flathead V8 or a hot Model A/B.

 

Any one on this site remember George F. Horn from Patterson, N.J. ?

Back in the early 60's he had a business called Karting Supply Company which was located either in or very near the old "Gasoline Alley" in Patterson, N.J. and I think he used to also sell parts for midgets.

I was about 16 years old when I used to drive from Connecticut to his shop to purchase kart parts since in those day's there were not many shops around to buy parts from.

I think his brother raced midgets years ago.

Do you have any information about this car? I don't remember ever seeing that style roll bar on an Edmunds before.

...this has just turned up in the UK....now the car has been altered over the years...and we don't really know too much about it...runs a Tin Side V8 60...Norden Steering.....I like the grill...but I'll let the photos do the talking...any idea what it is ?

 

Very distinctive nose and grille, off something European? Body steel or aluminum?

Current wheels look larger than 12" or 13" that should be on a midget race car. Barn find photo looks like a mag wheel on the right front. What size now?

What is drive line? Clutch and transmission might suggest English or European home built road racer emulating our midget design also large current front brakes might support that guess?

Two other engines I presume are a whole other subject.

28dreyer....this is a strange one....the car was found in the late 1990's...the then owner,changed so much,to race in the UK...now the task is to return it to its original barn find condition...the original steering box has been located,and a V8 60 found to replace the seized original....no drive train or rear end found yet.....thought it might have come from Australia ?......it would be nice to know what we are dealing with,but perhaps we'll never know.

 

Ah, so.

When you say "race in the UK" I presume you mean road race and that would explain the presumed larger tires and wheels. The thought about Australia might be very plausible and account for the at least one mag wheel and possibly the nose and grille.

As far as knowing what you are dealing with, there were thousands of midgets built in this country and many "amalgamated" from wrecks. Everyone seeks to positively identify their "find" and history. I am a veteran of two 40's cars and will say if you are fortunate to have a known car and/or builder you are fortunate. Trying to identify many of those thousands that might remain in some condition, is a lost cause and yes "perhaps you will never know". Add in what was built in Australia and possibly New Zealand and the plot thickens.
