More than 30 years ago i had a college teacher that when asked showed us how he could TIG tin foil, amongst other things. He (Nick Colin) was a welder for Hughes Helicoptors in the LA area. Wish I would have kept up on my skills since then, i maybe could call myself a 'welder' !!

We have an engineering saying here in NZ
    "She's f***ed when a welder can't fix it"

  5. Heck, I learnt to weld two razor blades together edge to edge, but I never figured out what to do with 'em after I got 'em welded together.
Kinda like my used tooth pick collection.

You got up early to tell us that?

  10. We have special rods here which we call "Cocky shit rods" - they're the ones which you blame your bad welding on.
I stooged a Mechanical Engineer once when I convinced him that you could arc-weld timber.
You had to use the correct rods of course, soft rods for softwoods and hard rods for -Yep, hardwoods. This was the guy who started up a 15watt soldering iron and wanted to "weld" a handle onto a stainless steel saucepan!

A mentor said he could see his heartbeat in his gas welds.

  13. I used to burn with a torch like that. Such a smooth and fine line except for the beats.
Now I hand torch burn much more like a machine,
    ( one that's old and wore out.:p)
I can still get after it though in the morning within the 2 cup coffee window. Before that it's just not happening and at cup 3 it's over.

Talk about tough welding, this is what I'm doing as we speak. This is the structure that holds the clutch & brake pedals in an original '63 Galaxy, H-M prepped 427 car that is drag raced. The boss' have worn out that the bushings go into and cause the pedals to bind. The aluminum is an alignment bar to true things up for welding.
Imagine all I went thru just to get to a point where I can 'safely' weld under the dash of this rare car. I just hit it with the TIG torch to weld the boss' and discovered those boss' are brass or bronze.

There is a solution for this. You will need to pull the pedal assembly out, though.

I can get you the link to the parts.

    Traditional?

He's wearing so much other personal protection gear I got to thinking maybe he's seriously on to something.
1 - Pretty hard for a spark to ricochet behind his reading glasses.
2 - Rotate the jug 30 degrees for a brand new lens
3 - Probably had to cut some vent holes in the bottom (now top) to prevent fogging and asphixition

My thoughts exactly. Great view. Hardly any chance of errant material hitting. The only drawback is the material possibly cracking or splintering.
Would be perfect using it under a car.

I cant let this thread die.

I've just found the worlds greatest fabricator [ slightly OT, but I recommend you all watch this for 3 minutes]
He has some pretty favourable comments about his skills too [a good bit of reading]

I watched the Wheel of Debt as suggested by Kerrynzl - OMG, that was horrifying! I was just waiting to see blood and gore spilled all over the pine he was splitting.
    FFS!!
No wonder Darwin came up with his theory of evolution, and then a couple of hundred years later, they named an award after him for idiots like that who, by their own stupid actions, improve the human gene pool, no matter how shallow it already seems from time to time.
Great thread - totally dumb, but a good laugh.
    Now on with it!!
    Cheers.

I've had a really poor Easter. Yesterday we had to put my dog down. It was unexpected as she was pretty young. This thread really lightened my mood. Thanks guys. Very funny stuff!
