Projects 29 roadster highboy build

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by kracker36, Feb 11, 2016.

  1. Well I got a real soft spot for a high boy roadster. For some reason in my minds eye roadsters look best as high boys and coupes and sedans should be channeled. Yea, yea lame as hell but I call it the way I see it.

Anyway you can't go wrong with a high bot roadster.

I have been a fan of the Y block about forever, but I would not discount the 260 V8. I have not seen a 260 powered hot rod since about the '60s that I recall, they are cool little motors and in good shape even stock push a light car along real well.

I agree on the y block option as far as it is more appropriate for this car. I also have a few FE goodies in the shop too, so its an option as well.

The only issue with my 260 and my weiand timing cover is the use of an electric water pump. Not crazy about that in this car

  4. LOL its a sprint car option, back it in baby. :D

How about an option for a fan?? Lol

  6. Well I like the little fold up ones that you get in China town, but a lot of mid westerners prefer those big ol Baptist fans like you get at the tent revival. :D

I guess that if you were running an electric pump an electric fan would definitely be in order. LOL Never really thought about a fan with an electric water pump, but there has to be a 20 dollar cure for this 10 cent problem. ;)

@Kracker...Speaking of the 'Merc stuff', I bought a '63-1/2 Merc Marauder 390 engine, has round top stamped steel valve covers, with MERCURY stamped prominently atop.
My son and I came across some 'Poverty Caps' with MERCURY stamped in them, (Mehnonite folks order cars with no options around here, so there are some in wrecking yards...this Merc was early '70s. Never saw a 'baseline Merc', they are a step above Fords and usually ordered with all the 'trim'...)

There was a place to get a shortened SBF water pump in the '80s-'90s, seems that somebody offered a whole kit, pulleys, bracket to shorten the lengthy front by 1.5".
Street rod guys were all over 'em, I saw a neat '25 T sedan with the setup. Engine was firewall-tunneled, but not near as far as it would have been with the 'snub nosed pump'!

Not sure if you are running fenders and hood, but my 28A on a 32 Frame the regular water pump and Ford fan fit with moving the radiator forward an inch or so. 32 frame is longer.

I love that cover, very few people have those or has even seen them. The electric water pump will work just fine.

Not a great pic, but worked hard to box frame and install rear x member. Finally sitting on the frame with NO gap!

    Front wheels are 16x3.5" v8/60s. Rears 16x4.5s.

Nice job, I've recently gathered a pile of roadster body parts, 32 frame, axle, spindles.....I'll be following the build.

The Brookville will save a lot of time on body work. I put mine on an original frame that was pinched in the 50's(a little too much) but it worked out ok. I also went with the Merc caps to be different. They are somewhat hard to find.

Well, got a bit of news! Committed to a 289 studebaker this week. Got a 289 with an Edmunds 2x2 i take. I normally keep Fords in Fords, but this is going to be cool anyway.

Both of the blocks that I checked are standard bore. Now I have to decide on which trans to run behind it.

  28. Love the timing cover on the 260. There was an article in Hot Rod years ago that used a water pump from a Detroit 4/71 -6/71 series diesel. They placed it low and close to the block on the right side, fabbed the bracketry and an end plate with a bung welded to it for the return and plumbed it with an10 hose to a timing cover just like yours on a SBC. I forget what drive pulley they used, but it was from a domestic car. The pump is very compact.
On that note, how about a flathead fan bracket/hub off an 8 BA ( late, for the narrow belt) with custom bracket off of the original water pump mounts. I don't like electric fans.
