Swi, the picture with the T-birds could be a new dealership or sperm bank. It says " can we service you?"

The Owl Barber shop was in L.A. on 6th street and shut down in '04 after 70 years.

When I was a little kid, we had both of these cars. My mother had the '50 Mercury, 3 speed with O/D, and my dad had the '50 Lincoln with an automatic. That was the first car with an automatic we had. He traded in '48 Chrysler with Fluid Drive that he regarded as too sluggish with the flathead 6. My mother hated the O/D and never used it because she said it made her feel like the car was "running away" with her. My cousin was selling cars at Lynch Lincoln-Mercury in Santa Monica at the time and I suspect he put the deal together. My mother held on to her '41 Mercury coupe for a couple of more years because she was sentimentally attached to it. Eventually she sold it to a family friend who kept it until '62.

^^^ That's why I never liked riding bumper-cars as a kid....someone was always coming after me with fingers pointing just like that!....I was the kid riding fast as I could around the edges of the driving rink, to avoid that finger pointing, while everyone else was bumping into each other!:D

Hey medium- As a kid I spent a lot of time at Edgewater and Tri State. My uncle and cousin took me often. Yesterday a friend of mine sold me a DVD with 2,500 pics from 1970-1977...I can't stop looking at them. I'm just up the road from the race tracks and if you want the DVD I'm happy to make you a copy. It only cost me $20. I will also continue to post when time permits.

You've got it right Gary! Honest Joe had this shop in the east side of downtown Dallas
in an area that the black folks called "deep ellum". It was actually Elm Street and was
where all the pawn shops were located in the mid to late 50's when I was a teenager.
Us "hoodlums" hung out down there. Any kid could buy switch blade knives there.
Joe also had a Jeep station wagon decorated just like his pawn shop.

I don't get over there often, it is on the other side of the city. A lot of that area was "commended" by the City of Norwood (GM plant had been there too) following a developer's report on how to raise revenue. The whole neighborhood was seized by Eminent domain and the same developer made a fortune building a shopping center. Sheppards was just outside of Norwood but the surrounding area also revamped. I have a friend who introduced my to a member of the Sheppard family several years ago. IIRC, his uncle owned the business.
