The oldest continuous motor race in the U.S. is the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Held every July 4th since 1916.
The "Race to the Clouds" runs 12.42 miles over 156 turns climbing 4720 ft. of the 14,110 ft mountain. Question. Could the over-turned travel trailer in post #106059 be the NHRA Safety Safari trailer? Any thoughts? Look at the logo on the rear.

The hacked up VW in the Pike's Peak picture is Bill Rutan's and is Porsche Carrera powered.. It still holds the record for Mt. Washington hill climb.

Yeah, I noticed that also. Maybe this is why they ended up with the newer Dodge later on.

That's the trailer...still exists in Wally Parks NHRA Museum in Pomona, CA along with restored (not original) wagon...

I managed to find the same image here on the hamb with the accompanying text:

    1954
Drag Safari in the NHRA F1 panel delivery:
Bud Coons & Eric Rickman going from L.A. to Oakland Roadster Show.
OH SH!T, coming down the "Grapevine" near Bakersfield.

So good eye - it was the safety safari caravan.

    Mart.

Picture popped up last month in this thread, it is the Safari Trailer. Bud Coons & Eric Rickman going from L.A. to Oakland Roadster Show crashed the NHRA panel and safari trailer on the grapevine...so the story goes.

oops, I should have read Marts post first.
