    Seb,
If you count the rockers on the upper shaft, there are eight......only four on the lower. Half of the upper rockers are 'relay' rockers, transferring action across the top of the head, via a pushrod, into an arm on the lower rocker that then operates the valve.

..I found this pic years ago on a cutaway art forum and it was listed as "an overhead valve"
    (on a Mercury Flathead block)

...It was in fact a very nice cutaway diagram of the Adams-Moeller rocker-arm heads
Which were a marvel of early technology..
.."inclined valves, doomed pistons, transverse pushrods on the exhaust side"
and even a Quadletteral capti-nomplate to boot!

    OHV%20Merc.JPG

Adams-Moeller rocker-arm heads as per the above cutaway.

I had to dig but I found an article regarding C-T Engineering
    and their modified Ardun Heads.
(Which would go on win the CRA Sprintcar Championship in 1957)

Pretty sure there was a one-off dual overhead cam conversion shown in one of the early books (Huntington or Fisher, most likely). I think there was one grainy pic showing V shafts coming up from former distributor location to gear drives upstairs for all the cams. I'm not able to lookitup right now, but I think it was a book as noted that half the HAMB would own. I believe it was an abortive Indy project.
The flathead and its conversions had one hopeless disadvantage in the ealry OHV days, no matter what went upstairs:
The flathead started life as a liter or more smaller than any of the early OHV's that had serious competition applications...and the main ones, Olds and Chrysler, had just as much room for extra bore and stroke as the flathead did, so catching up wasn't possible. A maxed-out flathead just reached the starting point for the big engines.
The last year a flathead took top eliminator at the national drags was '55 (or 6?? Need to go lookitup.), and it barely smoked a hemi to do the job.
The Chevy was at a different level, roughly flatheadable size, but it was immediately breaking new ground in the power per inch department as a second-generation development of the American OHV.

There was an older gentleman here in Denver that was putting together a flathead with Cadillac Northstar heads on it. Looked like it would be very possible. I saw it in his shop a few years ago. Unfortunately he has passed away and I never got to see if he finished it.

This is brand new but it still fits the parameter of this thread. Mike Davidson of Flatattack fame has just completed a SOHC (Hemi) conversion (Nov/Dec 2015) and is selling kits for those so inclined, to add horsepower to their flathead. From what I understand there are a few options available including a Bosch type fuel injection that can be added on an unmachined portion of the head. I got this information when I was looking through the posts on The Flat Spot on Facebook. You will have to scroll down a bit but there are pictures and a lot of information on Mike Davidson's new conversion on this Facebook site. Maybe someone with more computer savvy than what I possess could post a picture on here from this site. Porknbeaner, this was an excellent idea for a thread,(you have made winter just that much shorter for me) and I have really enjoyed reading all the posts that everyone has posted here. I have always been of the opinion that a flathead is still a flathead even though it has been fitted with an overhead valve or similar conversion. Yes I know technically the basic flathead configuration no longer applies but the block is still a flathead and all of the other engine components are still flathead, so what else could it possibly be called.

All of these engines are fascinating but I can't figure this one out. Where is the intake/induction manifold? It looks like there is some sort of manifold made out of a rectangular billet but the 3-ported tubes on top look more like water passages. And is that a mechanical direct-port fuel injection pump mounted top dead center? And I love the 'zerk' grease fittings on it.

You are closer than you think...The blocks that the water tubes are attached to are actually the fuel injection body so there is no "manifold"..Enlarge View attachment 3117234

  28. I believe this to be correct, the water exist back to the radiator from the head unless I am mistaken and the tubes conning out of the air box are for air inlet.

There was an interesting pic earlier that had mechanical injection and drew the air from the cowl area, I'll see if I can find it. I liked the setup really clean not busy like some carbureted motors.

Here seb this will help a bit so you don't have to look for the attachment. ;)

Nope I was mistaken that is water, they are using the cowl tank for cooling fluid. Sorry

  29. Here is a question I have had for a while. The last person I could have asked passed in '03 so now I am depending on you guys for an answer. LOL

I wonder if there was an advantage to an f head configuration over the exhaust located in the head like a more modern valve in head motor. Is it a cost or design simplicity advantage or?

If you went to Overhead intake valve, it allowed you to use a much larger valve than you could if you were to put two valves in the chamber. If you went to overhead exhaust valve, you got the exhaust tract out of the block and lowered engine temp. And again you could use larger valves to feed a long stroke small bore engine.
