Virgil"s car is the one at the top of the page and the only 33 in the batch so I presume that #531 is Alan Tschida and thus those two captions are reversed.

  2. That's Al's 40 with #531 on it...just switch the 2 captions. Al's car still exists...up in the Duluth MN. area. Al had a couple coupes, and also ran a '33 for a season or two, as well as the former Lutz/Lundberg '41 Sedan. His son now has a replica of the 40. g-willys

It is San Fernando, before all the wooden signs went up around the starting line to try and dampen the noise.

Need help in filling in IDs: from right: Beaver Hunter, Henry Harrison driving (though several drivers drove the Beaver Hunter, Winged Express next in the last row (though that sure doesn't look like Willie), don't recognize the others (damn, and I used to race fuel altered!!)

Slo-Pokes car club member, at Vancouver...from the American Hot Rod Foundation (from Marty Strode: I'm pretty sure the '27 touring out of the Slo-Poks is Jack Coonrod. Jack set the NHRA C/SR record in '59 with a flathead. He switched to a 354 Chrysler in 1960, and bought the Chrisman built Hemi out of Frank Cannon's T-Bird. In '61 he teamed up with club member Nick Nicholson, and installed Nick's blown Hemi in the car, and they set the record at McMinnville. Jack had great success as an A/GS match racer, around the US until '67, and came out of retirement in '86, to do it all over again ! Thanks, Marty! (I remember a early picture of a green 33 Willys pickup AA/GS with Slo-Poks on it, given Marty's information, it was probably early Jack Coonrod)

If Garlits could run the Wynn's Winder, then Powers & Riley could run the Wynn's Winner. They ran a Crosley bodied altered before this fueler, once ran an Ardun powered car), and, as far as I know, were the first to build a dragster reverser....From Iowa.

Is that Wayne Arteagua (sp??) on the left?

I must admit that when I look at some of the early altered cars I am not sure I would want to drive one!!
They look shaky at best and really must have been a handful to drive at the top end.

Kind of prophetic that Linda and Billy are side by side.

I think you're right. GlenOaks Blvd. in the background? The 'no signs thing' threw me off.

That's the Daddy's Auto Body Buick-powered car, first of Kent Fuller's many chasses---owned by Don Johnson who later ran the "Don the Beachcomber" top fuel cars....when it was yellow it made the cover of HRM, but the fiberglass body was too heavy to make the car competitive.

I think the ' Daddys Auto Body ' dragster was kind of the ' Road Kings ' club car, as several drivers got their start driving it at Fernando

296Ardun mentioned a SloPoks gasser pickup. I do believe that this 36 Willys was driven by Wayne Harry. Harry and Coonrod were partners later on and separately were some early hitters in nostalgia racing.

I think that's an early Kent Fuller car.

I watched the evolution of Wayne Harry's 36 Willys PU. In '61 it ran F/G with a 180 Norden crank flathead, then Wayne's buddy Lloyd Clemans, pulled the blown flathead out of his 'T' sedan, and they ran it in the truck for a short time. Wayne then teamed up with Club member Bill Lewis, running Bill's Blown Olds for a season. In '64, Jack Coonrod supplied a blown Chrysler, and the duo started making history. The coupe would follow. 2013-12-22 105545.jpg Coonrod and Harry.jpg
