  1. Check the plugs on the bottom of the float bowls to make sure they match the bowl. Even though the bowl is marked B you could have BB tubes in the accelerating wells. I run BB tubes in my B float bowl. The plugs should be stamped on the bottom.

  2. Both my BB S models and one BB SR model have the same choke disc. One thing to note is I found that if you crank more than one or two times with the choke on this will flood your engine quickly.

62pan Thanks for the fast response. The SR carb B float is stamped with a B. The S-BB carb float is stamped BB. I pulled them and the SR and S tubes are different and can't be swapped, but you probably already knew this.

  4. I was wondering while we are on the subject of Winfield speed parts if anyone knows what cams he was grinding for the flathead 4 banger or flathead v8,s running at Bonneville. I have one of his SU1-A cams and like it very much but what it was ground for I haven't a clue maybe oval track, maybe drags...don't know ... wondering what he would have ground for wide open throttle engines used for top speed record attempts

  5. John, Best deal to do would be to contact Jim Brierley about his cams. I have one of his cam list and for Bonneville or Dry lakes four cyl flathead he list a No. 410 FI, duration is 288 and lift is .410 Not sure if this is a Winfield grind or one of his own.

Are you running the 1A on the street? Any problems with idle?

  6. IMG_2494.JPG IMG_2434.JPG Yes I run the SU1-A on the street..1952 8rt .060 over w/3x2- 94s, Edelbrock alum heads, reds street headers bubba's dizzy... The idle is somewhat rough but very manageable. idle speed is 800 rpm. I have it in my 52 f1. and drive it everywhere. It is sensitive to high altitude above 3500 feet hear in Virginia. I live down on the coastal plain and its jetted for that. I'm sure a jet change would help it at high altitude but I drive mostly down on the low land .

    I run a SU1A in my 39 with a 276 engine and 390 Holley carb. Love it.

  9. I'm thinking of selling these. 2x NOS never used Winfield D throttle body's With choke horns. Pretty rare I'd say. Open to offers as not sure what they'd be worth. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1453752822.868730.jpg

I have a Winfield model O barrel throttle aluminum carburetor. I have it on my 1928 Chevrolet sprint car. Does anyone have any information on the Winfield "0". I am having too much fuel dump on heavy acceleration causing lots of black smoke and fouling. Hope to find the answers.

I finally joined the carb club last month...

I've got the RayDay head, Winfield intake, and Cyclone Winfield-to-Stromberg Adaptor that all came off of a hot-rod Roadster Pickup back in '56. So the question is, do I run the what I've got now with the Stromberg as it all was in the '50s? Or do I just go all elitist and throw the SR up on there?

  13. not really enough carb for that ray day head.... imo

  14. I've seen Winfield ads where you got a 6-1 head, intake and a B carb as a package deal. I'm sure it will work just fine. You can always add BB tubes to upgrade.

There's the rub, my Ray Day head is an 8.3:1 compression ratio. Might be looking for some BB stuff...

  17. @RainierHooker I have a BB updraft we could hang that downdraft bowl on.

  18. I've heard that before as well and also heard that the C was offered with the 7:1 redhead.

I found this intake at a swap meet today. It has me a little puzzled though as it doesn't look like all the other Winfield A/B intakes I have seen. It doesn't have the linkage bosses cast into the bottom and no size stamped into it. The carburetor opening measures 1 3/8" whichI have read is a BB. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Looks like my A/B Winfield BB intake except for the flat plate, instead of the threaded holes. I am not at home to confirm intake opening size, but as you have stated, should be 1 3/8" for a BB carb. I have attached a couple of pics of my BB intake. Yours is the first intake I have seen without the bosses. I had always assumed the bosses were for bolting to the stock exhaust manifold. Nice find by the way.

Thanks it was a good deal even though I do have a Winfield carburetor to go with it. I still couldn't pass it up. Has anyone adapted any other carburetor to this manifold with success? I have stromberg 81, 97, and the a Plymouth Carter which I thought would be the easiest to make a bolt on plate for.

I was planning on running a stromberg 97 on my Winfield intake, before I managed to get my hands on a winfield BB carburettor. I seem to recall that Winfield (or someone else) may have even made adapters for this back in the day. I may have some part numbers/info on the adapters in my file of winfield info at home. Unfortunately I am away at work. I was planning on buying an adapter similar to the offenhauser one in the link below and fabricating an adaptor plate. Another option might be to get BCCHOPIT here on the HAMB to fabricate you an adapter to use.

Will be interested to hear how you get on.

Unfortunately, since I'm on the opposite side of the planet from my garage, I haven't yet. I still have a few more months in which to waffle...

Here's my collection of Winfield parts, I'm still on the lookout for a complete down draught S or SR carburetor in either B or BB in size! For the moment I'm going to run a Stromberg 97 on an adapter to to the Winfield intake on my 4 banger. Hopefully I'll find one soon!

Beautiful waxhead! I have almost the same setup I'm hopeing to have on the road soon.
I notice you're not using small blocks on the other side of the manifold mounting bolts...I thought those were needed. Not so?

Thanks mate. I am using blocks on the other side of the manifold mounting bolts. They are hard to see as they are black. You might be able to see them better in these pics.
