Unfortunately I don't, when I got the car it had been sitting scine 1973...there was a lot of rust repair.... The cool thing for me is I live 20 mins from Macs.... This was my first build... Doing some interior work and putting a three duece setup on this winter... Next winter plans include frenching headlight, rounding hood and door corners.... Summers are too short here to tear into projects
Haha you right David. Here ya go buddy Waiting to paint the firewall till I get the clutch cable placement figured out.
Started smoothing out the firewall. I've made some progress since this picture. I'm figuring out how to lay the bondo each time I do it. This is definitely one of the harder things I've done. Getting it to lay down smoothly and follow the contours is hard. It makes me appreciate you good body guys even more than I have before.
Laying down filler nicely definitly takes practice, the nicer you put it onthe less sanding you have to do. We all hate sanding
wow great build! Just read the whole thing, very inspiring and motivates me for th 58 Buick...Love the engine color, what is it? I am thinking of painting my car gold...
Thanks Michael knight. Good tip. I've definitely got to work on that. I think I had more filler dust on the ground than I put on the car haha.
Thank you. Here is what I used It's PPG J128 single stage base with J78 gold aluminum toner. The PPG store in Simi Valley mixed it up for me and put it in a can so it could be shot at my engine builders place.
I was like a kid in a candy store when I discovered Space Age automotive paints in Mesa ,AZ when I lived in the Valley.Deco radios, clocks, automotive, and anything else I could paint,I was at the store a couple of times a month,'cuz I could get the exact color that I wanted.Color matched paint in a spray can....who'd a thunk
I finally made a little more progress today. I got the firewall and a few random bits in epoxy primer. First time using an HVLP gun. Becides for the massive runs, it came out ok. Haha. I know that I rushed it and tried laying it on too thick trying to cover up my bad body work. Oh well. Now I know.
Looks good. Dont worry about runs, you can always sand em out. Spraying primer is like anything else, just comes down to experience.
I finally have made a little progress. After fixing the primer runs I got it all sprayed in black. It was supposed to have been semi gloss, but turned out high gloss. Being so glossy really showed more of my bad body work, so I couldn't live with it. Blocked all that out smoother and had the paint shop re-mix some semi gloss with more flattener and resprayed it again. This time I could live with it. It's not perfect, and still glossier than I wanted, but good enough for under the hood I think. I Started re-assembling the steering and brake parts today. Waiting to hear back from a pinstriper to see if I can get that done before the engine goes in. I got some parts painted in hi gloss to contrast the semi also.
Good shit man, read the whole thing definitely the real deal, makes me anxious for this spring lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Oh does that front need look good. Dude. That's what I'm planning at the start of spring. I really like what you got going on
Looking great! Keep up the killer work. I too appreciate the "in progress" paint theme....also doing a new engine...in gold...as we speak. Us younger Kustom boys gotta stick together!!
Thanks for the compliments guys! cmarcus, looks good man! And yes, we gotta stick together. I don't know any younger kustom guys in my area, so you guys on here are it for me! I'm having the firewall pinstriped today. I'll post picture when it's done. Also, what would you guys suggest I do with my inner fenders? I'm not that good at metal work. I think I could get some of these dents and wrinkles out and skim it with bondo and make it look half way decent. Or, I have a friend with some inner fenders for sale, I would just have to go through raising the wheel wells all over again and that was a pain in the ass.
That's a question that can only be answered by you. When it comes to projects,I'm Steve Jobs crazy about the details,so I would buy those inner fenders. Will you regret not replacing them or can you live with it?Not everybody is OCD(I call it thorough) like me BTW,I'm liking your work thus far
Good call. Ya if i can't get it really looking good, it would always bother me. I guess Im thorough too.
